The British and Belgians devised a daring plan in 1915 to tip the balance: capturing or destroying the German ships using locally-sourced and specially transported vessels. Led by the flamboyant and somewhat incompetent Lieutenant-Commander Geoffrey Spicer-Simson, the British embarked on a complex overland journey to get their boats onto the lake. Spicer-Simson, known for his tall tales and braggart personality, was the only available officer willing to undertake the mission, despite a history of suspensions for incompetence.
Two small motorboats, Mimi and Toutou, each only around 40 feet long and armed with 3-pound guns, were the heart of this operation. They departed London in June 1915, traveling overland across Africaāthrough railways, rough terrains, rivers, and gorgesāto reach the lake after a six-month arduous journey. The journey included unorthodox transport methods, with the boats being disassembled, wagoned, and finally floated along the lake into combat.
Spicer-Simson was an outspoken and eccentric figure, known for his exaggerated exploits and even bizarre antics, like claiming he shot rhinos where none existed. Upon arrival, he also displayed a flamboyant personality, insulting local allies and donning tattoos and a skirt, earning him the nickname "Lord Belly-Cloth" among locals.
Barely three days after arriving, the British fleet, consisting of Mimi and Toutou, launched a surprise attack against the German steamer Kingani. The Germans did not initially realize the threat, but once engaged, it took only 11 minutes for the British boats to chase down, ram, and capture the Kingani. The German captain was killed during the brief battle, and the ship was subsequently repaired, renamed Fifi, and integrated into British service.
This swift victory was a turning point, demonstrating the potential of these small armed boats to challenge German control of the lake. The British quickly outfitted Fifi with a larger gun, further improving its combat capabilities.
The Germans, led by Commander Zimmer aboard the Graf von Goetzen, attempted to regain control after learning of the loss of Kingani. They sent out the Hedwig von Wissmann to locate and retaliate against the British vessels. In 1916, the Germans finally identified the British boats' positions and began a pursuit.
The relentless chase lasted for hours, culminating in the sinking (or scuttling) of the Hedwig after Fifi and Mimi attacked her with harassing fire, ultimately hitting her boiler. The Germans abandoned the ship, which was scuttled to prevent her capture. Meanwhile, Zimmer withdrew further into the inland waters as British control solidified.
Subsequently, the Germans scuttled their Graf von Goetzen, which had been built as a formidable ironclad, when they realized they could no longer hold the lake. The Belgian forces finally arrived in July 1916, taking control of Kigoma and effectively ending the naval combat on Lake Tanganyika.
The story of the Lake Tanganyika campaign is a blend of daring, eccentricity, and logistical ingenuity. The Britishās transportation of warships over thousands of miles of rugged African terrain stands as one of the most extraordinary feats of wartime logistics and improvisation. Probably not worth the effort it would take, but I'm wondering if there would be a way to set your SURGE payments to...more SURGE. So instead of having to convert HBD to HIVE and then swap.hive and then into SURGE, you could just compound the interest directly into SURGE at $.90. Then LSTR could take the HBD directly and buy LEO with it. It would obviously only work until the SURGE is sold out, so as I said, it may not be worth the effort. But it seems like it would save some steps while at the same time allowing LSTR to maybe capture some more of the HBD. Just curious.
