Rare Earth Surge: Stocks Soar Amid US-China Mineral Battle

Have you ever stopped to think about the tiny metals that make your smartphone tick or power your electric car? Those "rare earths" have ignited a surge of excitement on Wall Street.

Shares of US mining companies surged this week after China imposed stricter export regulations, turning a low-key trade dispute into an intense market rollercoaster.

It all kicked off on October 9, 2025, when China's Ministry of Commerce dropped Announcement No. 61. They imposed controls on five additional rare earth elements—adding to the seven restricted since April—making it more difficult to ship these materials to semiconductor factories and defense organizations.

Beijing says it's for national security, but the timing feels pointed. President Donald Trump is set to chat with Xi Jinping at the APEC summit in South Korea later this month, their first face-to-face since 2019. Starting December 1, the new rules will have the greatest impact, requiring government approval for any item containing even a trace of Chinese rare earths, whether it's magnets in fighter jets or components inside iPhones.

No wonder investors smell opportunity. Over in the US, the reaction was electric. Critical Metals Corp. jumped a whopping 55% in days. USA Rare Earth climbed over 18%, while Energy Fuels and MP Materials each gained 16% and 21%. These firms, mostly in spots like California's Mountain Pass mine or Wyoming digs. China pumps out about 90% of the world's rare earths, so their squeeze could choke global supply chains for EVs, wind turbines, and gadgets that are very important.

It's like holding the keys to tomorrow's tech kingdom. Imagine delays in new car models or pricier phones because parts can't flow. It's a wake-up call for the US to build its own stockpiles, maybe even with government buys or price supports floating around now. With talks approaching in South Korea, one thing is certain: this mineral dispute won’t be resolved quickly.
