Mississippi Struggles Amid Prolonged Ice Storm Blackouts

Imagine huddling in the cold with no lights or heat for days on end? That's what's happening to thousands of folks in Mississippi, even now, two weeks after a fierce winter storm slammed the state. It's a tough situation that's testing everyone's patience. The crisis kicked off January 24-25, as freezing rain and sleet blanketed northern Mississippi in ice. Trees buckled under the weight, crashing onto power lines and roads. Oxford, in Lafayette County, took a real beating, think snapped poles and tangled wires everywhere.

At the worst point, nearly 180,000 customers lost electricity, which is about 12% of the whole state.
The damage was massive. Now, into early February, things are improving, but not fast enough for everyone. Around 15,000 to 25,000 people are still without power, mostly in rural spots. Workers are out there battling the situation, clearing debris and restringing lines.

Yet with another cold snap on the horizon, it's scary for those affected. The storm has led to at least 29 deaths across Mississippi.
Families are dipping into savings for generators or hotel rooms, and some can't even cook meals. It's rough, especially for kids and older folks. As crews push on, power should return soon for most.
