Amazon signs nuclear energy deal to power AI data centers

Amazon has signed a long-term nuclear energy deal with an energy company to power its AWS data centers, particularly supporting the growing energy demands of artificial intelligence operations.

The agreement involves Amazon purchasing 1.92 gigawatts (GW) of electricity from the company's nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania through 2042.

The energy will be supplied through the electrical grid rather than directly from the nuclear plant, ensuring Amazon pays standard transmission fees that support grid maintenance and development.

This deal marks an expansion of Amazon’s commitment to carbon-free energy, complementing its earlier pledge to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2030 and reflecting the need for scalable, reliable clean energy sources to meet AI and cloud computing demands.

Amazon is also exploring future small modular reactor (SMR) projects with that company and other partners, aiming to add new nuclear capacity and innovate in nuclear technology for data center power.

The move aligns Amazon with other tech giants like Microsoft etc, who have similarly signed nuclear power agreements to fuel their AI data centers, reflecting a broader industry trend toward nuclear energy as a clean, scalable solution for high-performance computing needs.

This strategic shift to nuclear energy supports Amazon’s $20 billion investment in Pennsylvania data centers and underscores the importance of reliable, carbon-free power for the future of AI infrastructure.
