You Need Experience To Get Experience

avatar

This is going to be some personal reflection tonight...

Might not be crypto related in the slightest, but you may get a nugget or two from it. So while you read my latest post, I do hope you get value from it :)

Like most of you know, I've recently began my new career as a truck driver. It may not seem like the dream job for a lot of people, but it's been dang near perfect so far for me.

You see, I've been an entrepreneur for over two and a half decades. And why I loved working for myself, is because I had no...Boss. I enjoyed the personal responsibility, the challenges and keeping myself on course. No one over my shoulder, just me and my hustle!

So when my wife and I were discussing changes in our lives, and my need for a new career, truck driving just seemed like a natural fit for me.

A few reason, one I'm kind of sorta my own boss. Sure I go where dispatch sends me, and it's not my company but 99.5% of the time, I'm in charge of my day. And second, I love to drive....Like, I really love to drive.

So off I went back in January into truck driving school. Go my license in late March and started the job hunt....

And continued the job hunt....

Early July, I got hired in this company and I've been on the road pretty much ever since. There's been some big changes, and man, I miss my family (and my dog) but this is something again my wife and I discussed that needed to happen.

The biggest issue with this industry is that insurance companies hate new drivers. It's not that companies don't want to hire fresh out of school operators, but driving a semi is a lot more work than you may think.

You are in control of this massive machine while every day people cut you off, honk horns at you and flip you the bird. All the while, you need to be professional. Sadly, a lot of new drivers end up in some nasty spills and even road rage incidents, so that's why the insurance companies are looking for drivers will....

Experience!

What came first the chicken or the egg?

In this industry you really need experience, to get...Experience. And the more experience you get, the bigger the pay checks and the better the opportunities.

So what's a new driver to do?

Hustle! Hit the pavement. Heck, I got my license in March and finally got a truck driving job in July and trust me, I applied everywhere...

"How much experience do you have?"

Ummm...None?

"Click..."

But today I was reminded on how quickly, experience adds up....

I was picking up a load from a customer this morning and another driver from my company was ahead of me. He was finishing up the securement of his load and then he walks to my cab and introduces himself...

Then what happened next, shook me lol

He asked me if what he did was good enough because he assumed I was an experienced driver. I have been driving for about 3 week now, and he laughed and told me....

It was his first day so to him, I was VERY much experienced.

It happens quick!

So for anyone out there, looking for experience for the chosen field they wish to get into...Keep at it! Because before you know it, you are the veteran in the game....

It takes time to get experience and I am glad you were able to get things to work out. It sounds like a nightmare to get a job at the start and also deal with all that insurance. However, once you get things down, you can always go back to this job without any issues.

Yeah that's what is great. I'm building my resume. But my end goal...Is to make a living off my efforts here on chain!

I think this is why having friends and network also plays a big role. Like you get the experience by making the connections and the network and through which you would build your life ahead. You get leads and the recommendations. That is what I have observed.

Who you know, not always what you know.

It's funny how labor lawsuits work. They ask you for experience, languages, studies and anything else you can imagine, most of the time unnecessary for the jobs in demand. But when the time comes to give, oops the salary does not include payment for experience, languages, studies, etc...

The fact that being a truck driver is not the dream job of so many people does not mean. Well, I'm glad that you are proud of your job. You must be making cool money with it... I guess

This is very true and happy you are enjoying your new career path. I have my heavy duty license and have had it for over 30 years and just haven't used it that much. My experience was basically army related driving ammunition around the country and every trip you had to pay serious attention. The only driving since is I have taken over from drivers struggling to back into our work yard due to having to get the angles perfect as it is a really tight fit.

Oh man, I remember going through this when I was trying to get into the tech sector. I was still at University and I went to the career department to get some internships. I interviewed at a couple places and they said they wanted more experience. I'm like this is an internship right? The whole point is for me to get the experience here! It was a hot mess!

I think some savvy companies would embrace new blood in their field...Help mold them, train them and develop them.

Well you already started to congratulations on starting to get experience. Everything after this will become easier.

I got a couple of questions for you:

  • Do you listen to podcasts when you drive
  • Do you make voice notes of your thoughts for later blog posts.

Driving and running are both incredible for thinking. Wondering how you like to spend your time driving.

I totally agree with the speech he made regarding having your own business. If one has a manager above him, he will never be able to make decisions independently and therefore he will never be able to be master of his own future or of his own business. That being said I wish you the best of luck in your new business. !BEER
