Splinterlands Weekly Challenge Battle BATTLE MAGE SECRETS! Taking Sides
Every week there is a Splinterlands challenge to share a rule set using a specific card and on this week's post it is a battle with the Taking Sides rule set. I also encourage Splinterlands players to partake in the challenge because you get to try different strategies and earn some crypto in the process.
Rule set, Battle and Plan

The ruleset this time is Taking Sides. This means that no neutral monsters can be used. There is also 29 mana available and I am left with the choice of all splinter except for death.
The summoner I choose to use this time is Helios Matriarch. In a match like this, I think that +1 speed and having access to a gladiator is a good thing. It also lets me use my cards to the highest level.
Splinter | Mana Cost | Position | Reason |
---|---|---|---|
Helios Matriarch | 6 | Summoner | +1 speed and Conscript |
Failed Summoner | 2 | 1st | Magic Reflect |
Thane Newsong | 5 | 2nd | Inspire and Strengthen |
Queen Mycelia | 4 | 3rd | Protect and Amplify |
Vruz | 2 | 4th | Sneak and Martyr |
Katrelba Gobson | 6 | 5th | Sneak and Double Strike |
Fungus Flinger | 3 | 6th | Blind and Martyr |
Total Mana: | 28 |
My plan is to get Gobson to destroy my enemies' lineup using bloodlust, sneak, and double strike. I have Failed Summoner and Thane up front to delay any attacks that hit my frontline. There are two martyr monsters and the blind can also help me dodge a few attacks. I have Queen Mycelia with protect because I want to live longer and amplify the magic reflect damage. Thane for strengthen and inspire.
Round 1
At first glance, I have the advantage because my opponent has most of his attackers in the back. It won't hurt me at all to take out my opponent from the back. So it's pretty much a fight to see if I can survive longer enough.
Round 2
My Gobson managed to stack up some bloodlust but I did lose my Failed Summoner. It's still a battle of endurance.
Round 3
I managed to kill another monster and stack another bloodlust but I have lost all my filler monsters to delay my opponent. However, Gobson should be able to take out a monster every single turn so I don't think there should be too many problems.
Round 4
At this point, I think I have this match won. With all the armor and bloodlust stacked on top of Gobson, I just need enough turns to wipe out my opponent even with the thorns there. My opponent will take a while before he can take out my cards.
With the increased strength of Gobson due to bloodlust, I wiped out my opponent.
Conclusion
The battle did go as I expected. Thane increasing melee damage allowed me to take out the extra armor from protect using Vruz. With that, I was able to stake up bloodlust faster and take out my opponent. From there Gobson just destroyed my enemies's backline while stacking up more bloodlust. There wasn't much my opponent could do after that.
You can see my entire match here.
What did you think of my match? Was there anything you would have done differently? I think it is quite interesting to see how different players play in a ruleset.

Nice combination of Vruz and Katrelba, the speed helped take out the enemy backline effectively.
Yea. I also like Thane because of that increased damage. It allowed me to stack up bloodlust towards the start.
