Artificial Intelligence and the Job Market
The job market suffered multiple industrial revolutions throughout human history. Changes were always resisted and yet we pulled through and found the capacity to adapt. The job market lost some jobs that were no longer needed, but others were created instead.
The difficulty comes from the transition period, which is never easy, especially for people who are no longer very young and find it difficult to adapt to the changing paradigm.
It's been clear for years already that artificial intelligence (sometimes combined with robotics) will replace part of the existing jobs now performed by humans.
The recent spectacular evolutions from the large language model AIs only sped up the process, but the direction was already known. And yet, many people have been caught by surprise. That's one of the drawbacks of living in the present (or worse, the past). You enjoy the day (maybe), but "get hit by the train" when something major happens, that was predictable and could have prepared for.
Is it something different during this industrial revolution compared to the past ones, though?
Yes, it is! For the first time in history, the tools that are at the center of the industrial revolution are or will very soon become smarter than their creators.
If you think there's still a long time to that point, note that ChatGPT-4 recently was able to pass a clinical neurology exam with a 85% score.
Let's see how we will be able to handle this aspect, which is not a small thing to expedite easily.

Regarding the job market, I'd like to be optimistic and invite everyone who loses their jobs on Hive, where there's always something to do.
I see some potential hurdles:
- there is a big gap between the employee mentality and what happens on Hive:
- on a job the majority of employees either do the minimum required to keep their jobs or expect to be told what to do
- on Hive, we need to make decisions, take initiatives, collaborate, participate (or not) in various aspects of the ecosystem - that's why our activity on Hive was compared to a business rather than a job
- if we are realistic, Hive couldn't possibly fill in the income needs of all people who will lose their jobs, even if it grows exponentially from where we are. They come from different parts of the world and are used to different levels of income and lifestyles. Plus, we need investors too, time doesn't always compensate for the lack of money component.
But the direction is good. Crypto is a generator of inflation when that is what is (or will be) needed due to the technological deflation to which AI (and robotics) contributes massively. That's one reason why I don't understand the ambivalent or rather negative stance on crypto the US has. They can't be so stupid, those who took this position. Or maybe are they?
Crypto will also be the source of many new types of jobs. Some will be for internal consumption, inside the crypto sphere, and others will be liaisons to the outside world, like crypto-related "teachers", "marketers", "sellers", "consultants", "experts", etc.
The AI sector itself will generate some jobs during the transition period. It is much easier to use something like ChatGPT for the first time than it was to use a smartphone for the first time, which was much easier to use than the first iterations of mobile phones. However, an artist or even a regular user might need some training to use an AI that generates images/music based on a prompt.
Then, when we talk about AI+robotics, people will need to be trained to operate some of those robots, plus, they will need maintenance. I suppose it will take a while before maintenance will be performed by other robots.
We probably can't see much further than that when it comes to what the job market will become, but something is coming to replace some of the jobs.
If there is a serious shortage of jobs and still a high demand, we will likely see something like a UBI come to life. I expect it to be quite popular, but instead of being a right, it will likely come with more strings attached.
For those who will be able to leap from the employee mentality to the investor mentality, I expect the tokenization of everything will come, eventually, in one form or another. That will allow most people to hold fractions into various investments to which now they don't have access due to the high thresholds on minimum investment needed.

Very true! We can't stay the same in a changing world.

Many are choosing to complain instead of getting themselves stationed in their desired skill in the new revolution. I think programmers are going to be the lead actors in the next revolution as it’s the base layer of the internet and crypto world at large. Most of this skill are even now easier to learn thanks to the internet so whenever I see anyone complain I don’t see them as unskilled but their problem having a victim mentality which is mostly focused on governments helping them out without them having to work or figure things out on their own.
I like the idea of Hive being a business. You explained it all well as it’s left to use to get involve or to not. The next revolution is going to be about the choice we make each second and how we choose to spend our time not how many college degree you hoard.
I believe this is by education. We are educated as employees our entire lives, and some simply can't change the mentality once it's ingrained in their minds.
This is debatable since the work of a programmer deals a lot with structured elements and thinking, and that, AI will be very good at, despite now not being great at advanced math and logical AI development lagging behind language-based ones.
Governments rarely help. They are poor managers and move a problem from one area to another.
Absolutely! A degree becomes almost worthless the moment you get it in terms of remaining relevant with the times. Choices in life have always been important, but now, the speed of changes rarely gives someone a break to dwell on their decisions.
Yes, a mentality shift would be very hard for most people but for those who do, life would be much easier for them.
Exactly, it’s what they've been from the beginning for democracy.
No doubt about that and that's why we've got to be a very good decision maker and always understand how each decision will shape our life. Before it was to go to school and get a job but now it's all spread into many areas with different alternatives available for our use.
I only have one question about the AI
Do you think it is here to stay?
Yes!
I think being proactive and developing an adaptable mindset will also help. Some of the big changes ahead may seem sudden but the writing is always on the wall for everyone to see. AI+robotics can take over a good portion of the job market, perhaps 80%.
Of course! But for different people, it would be easier or harder to develop such a mindset. I know people who are extremely excited by everything new and remain like that for their entire lives, even in their old age. For others, it was really exciting in their youth, but they lost the appetite to try many new things as they grew older (I'm in this category, even though, I am in crypto and have tried a little bit of AI, so I still experiment with new things, but for example, I don't like trying new tech as I used to). And others never liked to try new things, they were always conservative.
When you look at the percentage, it seems drastic, but it could very well reach that high. The difference is it won't be all at once because software (AI) grows at a higher rate than hardware (robotics). So, what will need both to replace human jobs will take longer unless we are talking about low-hanging fruits.
Yes, that's very true. The eagerness or willingness to try something new varies with age and from one person to another. I think those who are eager will fare well with the changes while the rest might have time to keep up with the changes and catch.
Reaching that percentage will definitely take time. Robotics still generally seems like a slow moving industry from what I've observed, apart from a few outliers like Tesla.
Sounds very exciting! I cant wait to get me some of that UBI!! Bring on the robots!!
You probably won't need it... as much.
They will come, so we'd better be ready for them, lol. But what kind of robots? Good or bad? Just trying to link it to your GIF, but I don't remember the name of the movie. :)
The movie from the gif is iRobot with Will Smith.
I am not sure if the robots will be good or bad tbh. I have already seen chatgpt has programmed certain parameters and refused my requests when researching different textbooks.
Thanks! I've seen it, but shows what a poor memory I have sometimes when there's something I don't focus on.
I haven't run into this yet, but I guess I haven't tried anything "controversial" enough. Maybe I should push the limit, just to see where the boundary is.
Till now I am not yet sure probably we should say artificial intelligence is doing more good than harm to us
Oh, for now, I'd definitely say it is more good than bad. In the long term, there are some concerns:
I definitely think that big changes are coming and if UBI happens, I do expect strings to be attached. I don't see us being able to change that as machines and software are able to do most of what we do if they improve enough. There will still be jobs but I think the pool of it will just drop over time.
Yeah, the time of rights given for free has long passed.
Maybe after they invent cryogeny and long-distance space travel, most of us (who will still be alive) will be sent to colonize other planets. :)
I think the pushback is just the usual case of resistance to something new. We've always seen it with new technology. Once the public realizes the advantages of Generative and Web3, they will change their mind soon enough.
Well, I'd say the pushback is more than the usual one. AI certainly has advantages, and, in its current phase of development, it would be dumb not to take advantage of them in certain situations. We will see what will happen in the long term. It's not like we can influence anything if we say one way or another...
The future actually lies in artificial intelligence and it is just a matter of time before it actually changes
It is certainly a sector that will have a major impact on our lives.
Good post @gadrian! Yes definite changes are on the way. I'm not looking forward to machines taking over peoples jobs. The machines have already been doing this for decades and taking away anything I might have been able to do. If you ask me it is kind of nightmarish to think about. Happy Holidays! Barb !BBH !CTP #ctp
Yeah, I understand, Barb. Hard to stop the desire of businesses for a higher profit. And I believe if they weren't more productive than us, few would bother to try to study and develop AIs or robots further, just for the sake of science.
Thanks @gadrian. Yes unfortunately there is so much for higher profit that nothing else matters. Yes I agree it would have not been studied unless one could get more bucks out of it. Hopefully more good than bad will come out of using AI. !BBH !CTP
Just like that in modern age there are some things which are going to be good for us and there are some things which may cause harm to people so after looking at everything one has to decide.
That is true. There are often multiple sides to many of our choices that need to be considered.
