The Church of San Francisco in Caracas and its altarpieces
Last Friday I had to go to downtown Caracas close to the historic center. I was accompanied by my aunt and my mother who went with the intention that I took them to visit the Church of San Francisco (Iglesia de San Francisco).
For me, this small church is one of the most beautiful in the historic center of Caracas.
Its construction in colonial times dates back to the year 1593 when it was built as a chapel attached to the Franciscan convent. However, the church as we see it today is from the year 1745 when it was rebuilt and modified. Source
One of the most impressive things about this church is its collection of altarpieces, and I invite you to join me on a brief visit inside to admire some of them.
The church is located on Avenue Universidad at the corner of San Francisco. And in front of it is an iconic tree of the city, La Ceiba de San Francisco.
And it is one of the colonial buildings considered a national monument.
This church has been a witness in the history of the city and one of the historical events of relevance that occurred in it is that it was in the Church of San Francisco where Simon Bolivar was awarded the title of Liberator on October 14, 1813.
This is recalled in a small stone inscription on the main facade of the church.
This church usually attracts many devotees. And when we visited it, even though they were not giving mass there were many people. Even so, we were able to walk around inside and admire some of the altarpieces.
But our first stop was where the image of San Onofre is, which was the reason why my aunt and my mother wanted to visit the church.
San Onofre is a saint, who is known to be the protector of workers. And people often ask him to help them in their jobs, so my aunt wanted to go and give him alms.
The main nave of the church is beautiful. And the altarpiece of the main altar in which there is a sculpture of St. Francis of Assisi is impressive.
However, out of respect, I could not get too close to appreciate the details, as a good group of parishioners were praying.
We then toured some of the side altarpieces.
Among those we were able to admire best was the altarpiece of St. Ignatius of Loyola and the Immaculate Conception, although the latter had some people standing in front of it queuing for confession.
And then were the altarpiece of Our Lady of Coromoto and that of St. Joseph.
There are also altarpieces dedicated to San Diego de Alcalá and San Antonio de Padua.
A side view towards the main altar where the pulpit can be seen.
At the end of one of the aisles, there is a small chapel. But the access to it was closed with a gate.
So we could only appreciate it a little through the gate.
A view upwards to the place where the organ is, and the wooden ceiling and the chandeliers are beautiful.
Look how beautiful the carved wood side doors are.
And so ended our tour of the Church of San Francisco. A place that if you ever come to Caracas and visit the center of the city, I recommend you to visit.

You call this small? this to me is gigantic and a master piece! I love it but too bad I do not know when I would make my way down to Caracas to see this magnificent church, now I wish I had a magic wand that can let me appear right inside the church😊😊
Hehe! Well, I say small because it is compared to the rest of the churches in the old town. Who knows maybe someday you'll come here, and if you do, you let me know and we'll give you a tour 😊
Ohhh that means the old town sure has gigantic churches then.
Awwww this is nice, I’ll have to triple my hustle to save enough money to come over there cause I just got a free tour guide yippee!!😃😃
Hehe!!! Yes! save and come 😄

1745? That was like 269 years ago 😲😲, but with the look of it now, you can tell how it was well maintained even now. And it has a modern touch of it now, it's beautiful, even the inside is elegant 😲
Yes, it is beautiful. And as you say, I also think it is an elegant church.
Oh, everything there is splendid. I love the architectural design of the church and the place seems to be tranquil. How I wish I can visit churches like this in the future.
Yes it is nice, although not so quiet because there are always parishioners coming and going:)

That is such a colourful inside, but so many altars, is that normal over there?
The history and the things the church and indeed the site must have seen over the last 500 years must be quite amazing!
It's great to see some more of where you and your mum and aunt went to see Super Eli💙 wishing you a wonderful Tuesday😁
It is not common here also so many altars that is why this church is so unique, because of the collection of as we call them in Spanish retablos.
Hope you are having a wonderful day, Super Ed 💙

Beautiful altarpieces! I've never been to that church. Thanks a lot for the tour, @coquicoin 😁
I must pray to San Onofre, commend my soul to him so that he'll give me less work and more money 🙈
Jaja!!! I like that prayer and I may join 😆
You should visit that church if you have the chance. It's beautiful.
Saludos! 🤗

Your churches there are similar to those in Macau ☺️..
Oh really? That's the place there with Portuguese influence, right?
Yup.. 😊
This church reminds me of another church that we visited in Florence. It's beautiful! I love its blue façade and that golden main altar is stunning.
I wish you a lovely day!
Thank you for stopping by :) Have a great day 😄
Wow - what a stunning church. I love the colonial architecture, and how it is now dwarfed by the more modern buildings - but it adds so much character ! Loving the inside too - those alter pieces are quite impressive - what a fantastic place !
