The pros and cons of monetizing social media

For this prompt, I would love to sit on the fence considering the pros and cons of monetizing social media. We have technology to thank for every development we've encountered as humans, ranging from improvements in our standard of living to feeding, health facilities, and transportation, to mention but a few. Centuries ago, there was nothing like social media; people's main source of income was farming and other trade skills. I remember my parents telling l and my siblings that during their courtship days, there was no mobile phone, and means of communication were very difficult as at then, unlike today, we all have access to mobile phones and can communicate with people in other countries. There is no limitation and that is the beauty of technology.

Monetizing social media wasn't a bad idea, but, unfortunately, many misuse the opportunity, especially the present GenZ generation. As good as it is, it has its advantages and disadvantages. Monetizing social media serves as an income stream for some people, money can be earned through ads, sponsored posts, affiliate marketing, and lots more. Since people had the idea of these, a lot of people are into content creation. We have those with meaningless posts, just in the name of wanting to earn and that's where the disadvantage comes in.

Another advantage is creative freedom; in this sense, a creator has the right and freedom over his or her content and how he or she engages with his or her audience. This promotes flexibility, which means one can work from anyone; no physical office is needed. One can work at his or her own pace and schedule, with no pressure of any kind. Of course, everyone would want to go for such a profitable option rather than being subjected to pressure while working under an employer. Social media opens doors for several opportunities; there are several ways to earn with different strategies following the rules governing such platforms. As good as these are, their disadvantages can be destabilizing.

Sometimes, creators suffer inconsistent income; like we all know, "every day is not Christmas." Earnings can fluctuate depending on the views, engagement, and algorithm. And amidst this fluctuating income, a creator has to fight the pressure to stay relevant, which means such an individual has to produce content and stay on trend, which can be mentally and physically tiring.

Another disadvantage is privacy risk; the more visible a creator is, the more online criticism he or she will face, and the more trolling and privacy invasion. Burnout is often associated with creating multiple contents; trying to keep up every day can lead to fatigue, which might make it easy to keep up as the body needs to rest at times.

With these pros and cons, I can say monetizing social media is not all bad, but things have to be done in moderation, and there should be some rules guiding content being posted online to avoid scams and any fraudulent acts that might pose risks to the lives of those watching and the creators themselves.

Thanks for your time and your comments will be appreciated.

You have mentioned some good points here. I personally believe that the usage of social media should be regulated somehow. I don't know how. But it should be because the people these days are wasting so much time on it and giving away so much of their private data so easily that it is becoming seemingly more problematic and a security threat for everyone.

Regulating contents would be a good idea because abuse is very rampant these days

Of content regulation is already underway, just not the way people might intend. They suppress everything that is against their agenda and amplify everything that is in favor of their agenda.

Actually, monetizing social media is not a bad idea at all. It has given a lot of young people a cool way to earn and start up life for themselves. Though it has disadvantages too.
