The BMW BERLIN-MARATHON: A run through history
A very special event is coming up for me on August 25, 2024: The 50th BMW BERLIN-MARATHON. This race covers a distance of 42.195 kilometers and is an outstanding event in the world of marathon running. But this marathon is not only a major sporting event, it also has a fascinating history.
The BMW BERLIN-MARATHON is one of the so-called World Marathon Majors, a selection of the world's most important marathons. Alongside events in major cities such as New York, Boston and London, the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON is a permanent fixture in the marathon calendar.
The origins of this unique race date back to 1964, when the first Berlin Marathon was launched. Horst Milde, the founder of the Berlin Marathon, was inspired by a marathon in 1973. This modest race with 92 participants started and finished at the Mommsenstadion and ran along the AVUS almost as far as the Wannsee lido in Grunewald. A year later, the route was slightly modified.
1981 marked a turning point in the history of the Berlin Marathon. The race left the Grunewald forest and became a city marathon. The start was moved to the meadow in front of the Reichstag building. The route took the runners past sights such as Checkpoint Charlie before finishing on Kurfürstendamm. This paved route also made it possible for wheelchair users to take part in the race. Due to the growing number of participants, the start was moved to Straße des 17. Juni in 1987.
A particular attraction of the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON lies in the course records. The current world records are held by Eliud Kipchoge (Kenya) with 2:01:09 hours for the men and Tigist Assefa (Ethiopia) with 2:11:53 hours for the women, all made here in Berlin.
A fascinating fact is that the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON ranks first on the list of the fastest marathon events (determined by adding up the course records) worldwide, with a total time of 4:13:02 hours.
The BMW BERLIN-MARATHON is not only a major sporting event, but also a fascinating journey through the history of Berlin. With every kilometer I cover, I will experience a piece of this moving history and perhaps even write a small part of it myself.

Am 25. August 2024 steht für mich ein ganz besonderes Ereignis an: Der 50. BMW BERLIN-MARATHON. Dieser Lauf erstreckt sich über eine Strecke von 42,195 Kilometern und ist ein herausragendes Ereignis in der Welt des Marathonlaufs. Doch dieser Marathon ist nicht nur ein sportliches Großereignis, er hat auch eine faszinierende Geschichte.
Der BMW BERLIN-MARATHON gehört zu den sogenannten World Marathon Majors, einer Auswahl der weltweit bedeutendsten Marathonläufe. Neben Veranstaltungen in Metropolen wie New York, Boston und London, ist der BMW BERLIN-MARATHON eine feste Größe im Marathon-Kalender.
Die Ursprünge dieses einzigartigen Laufs gehen auf das Jahr 1964 zurück, als der erste Berlin-Marathon ins Leben gerufen wurde. Inspiriert wurde Horst Milde, der Gründer des Berlin-Marathons, von einem Marathon im Jahr 1973. Dieser bescheidene Lauf mit 92 Teilnehmern startete und endete am Mommsenstadion und führte entlang der AVUS fast bis zum Strandbad Wannsee im Grunewald. Ein Jahr später wurde die Strecke leicht modifiziert.
1981 markierte einen Wendepunkt in der Geschichte des Berlin-Marathons. Der Lauf verließ den Grunewald und verwandelte sich in einen Stadtmarathon. Der Start wurde vor das Reichstagsgebäude auf die dortige Wiese verlegt. Die Strecke führte die Läuferinnen und Läufer vorbei an Sehenswürdigkeiten wie dem Checkpoint Charlie, bevor sie auf dem Kurfürstendamm endete. Diese asphaltierte Strecke eröffnete auch Rollstuhlfahrern die Teilnahme am Rennen. Aufgrund der wachsenden Teilnehmerzahlen wurde der Start 1987 auf die Straße des 17. Juni verlegt.
Ein besonderer Reiz des BMW BERLIN-MARATHON liegt in den Streckenrekorden. Aktuell halten Eliud Kipchoge (Kenia) mit 2:01:09 Stunden bei den Männern und Tigist Assefa (Äthiopien) mit 2:11:53 Stunden bei den Frauen die Weltrekorde.
Eine faszinierende Tatsache ist, dass der BMW BERLIN-MARATHON auf der Liste der schnellsten Marathonveranstaltungen (ermittelt durch Addition der Streckenrekorde) weltweit den ersten Platz belegt, mit einer Gesamtzeit von 4:13:02 Stunden.
Der BMW BERLIN-MARATHON ist nicht nur ein sportliches Großereignis, sondern auch eine faszinierende Reise durch die Geschichte Berlins. Mit jedem Kilometer, den ich zurücklege, werde ich ein Stück dieser bewegenden Geschichte erleben und vielleicht auch ein kleines Stück davon selbst schreiben.

Berlin is a Marathon Major. So is the London Marathon. A future installment of the London v. Berlin series just wrote itself!
that's a wonderful idea. So close to my eyes and I still didn't think of it myself. I immediately wondered which categories could be compared between the London and Berlin Marathons. Obviously not the length ;-) - but the number of participants and spectators, the prize money and the earliest date come to mind. Do you have any other ideas - 6 subcategories would be ideal.

The first 2 items could be combined, but the distinction still needs to be made if for no other reason than to have a tie-breaker in case you need it.
