The New Year’s wish lantern rose into the sky and came back down with an answer tied to it. No one had wished for anything, as they were just getting ready for Christmas Eve, and such was the excitement for this celebration after a year in which a pandemic had confined people to their homes that they thought it best to take it one step at a time.

The strange disease had taken a quarter of the city's population, so the few who remained decided to hold a large gathering in the main square, so that those left alone by the tragedy could enjoy the company of others during this important time of year.

Everyone contributed to the decorations and brought something for dinner. Many brought extra chairs for those who lived far from the square, as the idea was to make the night enjoyable and bring joy to one another. One neighbor brought a guitar, and after eating, they sang Christmas carols until dawn, when Santa Claus made a surprise appearance.

The children, very excited, ran out to meet him, receiving bags of candy as gifts. None of the neighbors had agreed to come dressed as Santa, but they didn't question the surprise either. After emptying his bag completely, Santa Claus left the party, and immediately afterwards, there was a major blackout. Anxiety took hold of the people, who used the flashlights on their phones to find their way home quickly.

Those who lived further away chose to wait for dawn in the square, as they thought it was better than risking tripping on the road. After all, who would be entering the village on Christmas Day? It was during those hours waiting for dawn that they began to wonder who had come up with the idea of dressing up as Santa.

The question remained unanswered, as did the cause of the blackout, but they preferred to end the year in a relaxed manner, as they had already had a difficult enough year without adding stress to the holidays.

When the 31st arrived, people had their wish lanterns ready. They waited until midnight to throw them into the air and enjoy the show in the sky, and what a show it was! As they all rose, one of them, a large one, began to descend to everyone's surprise. Some commented that perhaps it was defective, although it was not in free fall, but was moving in sync with the others but in the opposite direction.

When it touched the ground, everyone gathered around to see the large bag hanging from the bottom. It contained a large piece of candy, which they proceeded to unwrap with great curiosity. Imagine their surprise when they found a note that said, “Did anyone check the candies Santa left?” Then, everyone watched in amazement as the children fell one by one, victims of the poison in those sinister gifts, which killed them over the course of a week.

The mysterious Santa's wish had been fulfilled.

Nadie había deseado nada, pues apenas estaban preparándose para la noche de navidad, y era tal la efusividad por esta celebración luego de un año en el que una pandemia había confinado a las personas a permanecer encerrados en sus casas, que pensaban que lo mejor era ir un paso a la vez.

La rara enfermedad se había llevado un cuarto de la población de la ciudad, así que entre los pocos que quedaron decidieron hacer una gran reunión en la plaza principal, para que quienes quedaron solos por la tragedia vivieran en compañía estas fechas tan importantes.

Cada quien contribuyó con la decoración y llevó algo para la cena, muchos llevaron sillas de más para aquellos que vivían lejos de la plaza, pues la idea era hacer de esa noche un rato ameno y darse alegría mutuamente. Algún vecino llevó una guitarra y luego de comer, cantaron villancicos hasta luego del amanecer, cuando sorpresivamente apareció Santa Claus.

Los niños, muy emocionados salieron a su encuentro, recibiendo bolsitas de caramelos como regalo. Ninguno de los vecinos había acordado llegar vestido de Santa, pero tampoco cuestionaron la sorpresa. Ya luego de dejar su bolsa completamente vacía, Santa Claus abandonó la fiesta y de seguido se vino un gran apagón general. La angustia se apoderó de la gente, quienes usando las linternas de sus teléfonos buscaban como volver a casa rápidamente.

Los que vivían más lejos, optaron por amanecer en la plaza, para ellos era mejor eso que exponerse a tropezar en la vía, pues total, ¿Quién iba a entrar al pueblo en el día de navidad? Fue en esas horas esperando el alba que empezaron a preguntarse a quién se le había ocurrido la idea de vestirse de Santa.

La idea quedó en el aire, así como también qué había generado el apagón, pero prefirieron terminar el año de una manera relajada, ya bastante complicado lo habían pasado todo el año como para añadirle estrés a las fiestas.

Llegado el 31, las personas tenían preparadas sus linternas de los deseos. Esperaban la media noche para lanzarlas al aire y disfrutar del espectáculo en el cielo, y vaya que si fue un gran espectáculo, pues a medida que todas iban subiendo, una de ellas, de gran tamaño empezó a descender para sorpresa de todos. Alguno llegó a comentar que quizás había salido defectuosa, aunque no estaba en caída libre, sino que iba al compás de las otras pero en sentido contrario.

Cuando tocó el piso, todos se acercaron a ver el gran bolso que traía colgado de su parte inferior, tenía un gran caramelo que procedieron a desenvolver con gran curiosidad. Cuál sería su sorpresa al encontrar una nota que decía "¿alguno revisó los caramelos que dejó Santa?" mientras luego, todos veían estupefactos como los niños iban cayendo uno a uno víctimas del veneno que tenían esos regalos siniestros, que durante una semana fueron acabando con ellos.

El deseo del Santa misterioso se había cumplido.
