Beginners Guide To Splinterlands - Part 3 - Choosing Your First Splinter
Hello Splinterfans!
Welcome to Part 3 of my Beginners Guide to Splinterlands. If you missed Part 1 or Part 2, you can click the links. In Part 3 we will focus on choosing your first Splinter and suggested line up.
As a beginner, I would recommend to play first in the modern league as it will be easier than the wild league. There are less cards available and soon it will also be bot free, so more chance of human mistakes.
Summoner - Mylor Crowling
The advice I was given when starting was to go for the earth splinter with Mylor Crowling to take when starting out and the most fun to play. Even when you start to get more advanced in the game, you can still continue to play the beloved Mylor up until level 3 with ease and win a good percentage of your games.
My opinion is also confirmed by the Splinterguide who has Mylor Crowling with a 9 rating and 4th strongest summoner!! Mylor is a rare summoner, so can be cheaper than some of the others plus may likely be able to be played more often.
Looking at PeakMonsters (a newbies guide how to use I will produce in the future), shows you can buy him at level 1 for 8454 DEC ($7,18). This seems quite a good deal compared to the prices one year ago, but when starting out, I would recommend to just rent him.
This is because renting is also cheap right now and can give you lots of options for a small amount of crypto. Here you can see that you can rent Mylor Crowling at level 1 for just over 2 DEC ($0,002), which is ridiculously cheap.
Monsters
Once you have your summoner selected, you will need to select a handful of monsters that you would like to play with him. A good idea here is to buy or rent 10-20 earth monsters to give you some choice to play during your matches.
Mylor Crowling gives the thorns buff which means when you will be attacked with a melee attack, they will also receive damage for their troubles. The weakness of Mylor could therefore be a magic attack and strong ranged attack.
The goto tank for Mylor Crowling or the earth splinter at level 1 would be Unicorn Mustang in my opinion. The reason being that he has a quite strong attack, high health, is fast AND has the reduced damage from magic attack that many opponents will try to use.
Rental cost ~ 2 DEC ($0,002)
A second goto card you will want to have in your lineup is Queen Mycelia because she is a low mana cost plus gived 2 shield to each of your team members! This can prove vital many times.
Rental cost ~ 3,5 DEC ($0,003)
Next up is Goblin Psychic who could also be a regular feature in your deck with his powerful tank heal ability. As a common card, he is quite cheap to buy or rent.
Rental cost ~ 0,1 DEC ($0,000)
Buy cost ~ 136 DEC ($0,116)
Very often I would use the sneak attack with Mylor Crowling and therefore the Goblin Thief was a common card that I like to have in my deck.
Rental cost ~ 0,1 DEC ($0,000)
Buy cost ~ 268 DEC ($0,228)
Very often though, he would need a friend and I would like to pair him with the neuteral monster Uraeus who also has sneak attack but with some shield that comes in very handy.
Rental cost ~ 0,1 DEC ($0,000)
Buy cost ~ 182 DEC ($0,151)
Another important card is Acid Shooter with his ranged attack and low mana cost. He is a card that you want to squeeze in at the end of your back line.
Rental cost ~ 0,1 DEC ($0,000)
Buy cost ~ 401 DEC ($0,34)
For those low mana battles, it will come in very handy to have the Failed Summoner. He has just a 2 mana cost and can give you a great advantage by reflecting the magic attack of your opponent.
Rental cost ~ 0,1 DEC ($0,000)
A possibly unexpected useful card is the Hill Giant. With his low mana cost and good health score, he can sometimes be a good tank in those low mana battles.
Rental cost ~ 0,1 DEC ($0,000)
Buy cost ~ 35 DEC ($0,03)
Important for those high mana battles or where you expect a melee attack, Mycelic Infantry is a must in most earth deck lineups.
Rental cost ~ 0,1 DEC ($0,000)
Buy cost ~ 122 DEC ($0,104)
The final card that I would put in my top 10 beginner cards would be Regal Peryton who has a good health score and is very fast with the flying ability. This card will fit in many of your lineups.
Final Thoughts
These are just a small selection of possible monsters that you can rent but are ones I think would come in most handy. I would recommend when starting out to experiment a little and try and rent out a few more monsters to give yourself a bigger choice and see if they are useful for you or not and fit in with your game style. At a rental cost of 0,1 DEC per day (0,2 DEC for the minimum 2 day rental), it will not cost you very much if you do.
What do you think of these cards? Are there any you would replace them with? Or perhaps you would start with another splinter?
Let me know in the comments.

Thank you for guide Steve.
Thanks for checking it out.
Wow who recommended you this mylor. It's definitely a good strategy to get out of novice and bronze with :P
Im not sure now, would have to check back on my old posts! I think its pretty good upto lvl3 with Queen Myclia for some good battles.
yes unless the bots play same but use magic then u get counterd @_@
yes, that could be trickier then 👍
ya just a bit trickier haha. Still waiting for bigger news for SPL at least end of season in few days!
What news are you waiting?
Staked SPS to earn rewards and play at certain leagues instead of collection power
ah, that will be interesting!
Ya it will :P clean out some people that don't have anything
Like some bot accounts?
kind of like those with no sps and cards just pure renting
I have no SPS on one of my accounts. Hopefully will be ok.
u can delegate :P. SOrry if i reply slow im doing like 20+ brawls :')
😅🤣 that is hardcore
o.o well if SPS 50 centes its like 425 usd per brawl :P
😎👍
Mylor is a beast. I love him. It looks like these posts are being well received. I am happy to see that. Especially if they end up doing away with the bots, people are going to need to learn how to play again!
Thanks.. thats true, if the bots go it could be lots of learning to play again for many people! lol
I'd probably still suck no matter what. I always pick the wrong cards.
Yeah it isnt easy, but you have practice in a Guild or?
I play brawls pretty much pretty much every time there is one. I have found a niche with my gold cards. It was fray's that none one else seemed to want to fill, so I figured I would focus on that. All of my other cards are rented out.
Thats a good strategy. What fray do you usually do ?
It's 13 for us. I think it is like bronze leauge cap GF cards from all sets.
Thanks, I think I know the one. Makes sense!
I've played the sliver league one a couple of times too, but I prefer the lower one. It allows me the ability to make the best use of my cards. I have a lot that are down in the 2/3 range because I only have one of them.
That sounds pretty good. I play a bronze league deck with just level 1s. Can also be fun. Might look at the gold one too.

Excellent content, I would like to know more about Splinterlands, its a very exciting game and an interesting way to make cryptos. Nice post men.
Thanks for checking it out.
Thank you for sharing your experience. It is really helpful for me to learn how to play that game wisely but I think I forgot about the first 2 parts and I need to start reading from the beginning.
