Pitaya, fruit of the dragon (reprise)

In January 2025, I wrote a post about pitaya (called "dragonfruit" in English). Since it is a fruit that grows in tropical regions, it had been difficult to find in the areas where I've lived most of my life. The outside of the fruit is definitely strange looking 🙀 and lends credence to the English name for the fruit, with little imagination required. But, the inside is what really captivated me when I saw pictures of it online. I'd never seen a fruit with such a creamy-white inside, dotted with little black seeds. It looked amazing, like something from another world!

In that above-linked post, I wrote about the price of the fruits here, and how I found a better deal on frozen chunks of the fruit in a local market. I enjoyed it, and found the flavor to be somewhat reminiscent of both kiwi fruit and red raspberries. The fruit was red on the inside, though, not white. So, while I was happy to finally have tasted dragonfruit and liked it, I still wondered what the white-inside variety was like.

One day I happened to find a whole dragonfruit in another market and decided to buy it. The price was still a bit high for one fruit (USD $5, or about 5 HBD), but I remembered that  ...𝕐𝕆𝕃𝕆...  and added it to my basket. But, what was the color of the fruit inside...?!?!? Apparently, there is no way to know, just by looking at the outside of the fruit. It could be white, or red, and I think I read somewhere that yellow is another possibility, all with a slightly different flavor.

~ the thick, leathery-feeling "scales" on the outside gives "Dragonfruit" it's English name ~

When I cut the dragonfruit open, I was delighted to find the inside was white. I sliced the fruit into little cubes and popped one into my mouth. It had a similar flavor to the red variety, but it leaned more towards the taste of a kiwi fruit and less like raspberries. And I noticed the flavor was much more subtle than the red variety.

So, if I were to buy dragonfruit again (and I very likely will, at some point), I think I would rather have the red variety because it's more flavorful. I think the bag of frozen chunks I found at Walmart was the best deal, overall, for several reasons. First, the bag definitely contained more pieces than a single fruit would have, and was cheaper than a single fruit, too. Plus, there's the guarantee of getting the more flavorful red variety. And frozen, I can eat what I want and put the bag back in the freezer again; although I assume fresh dragonfruit could be frozen, too.

It is fun trying new foods and life is short. So, '𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒑𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒎' and go for the gusto! Do you like dragonfruit or other tropical fruits?

How awesome! I love dragonfruit, but it is so often overpriced. When I lived in the Caribbean in was cheap and available just about everywhere. I miss those good old days...

I'm glad you bought it and you are right, YOLO!

I bet the Caribbean is a food paradise! There was a guy from Puerto Rico who moved to North Carolina and opened a restaurant. His fare was amazing, often made with fresh ingredients he sourced from his hometown! Thanks for the comment! 😊

Interesting. I have checked around since I saw this post to confirm the traditional name for dragomfruit, unfortunately I couldn't find any .
Humm, I would like to physically search for the fruit at least to see it and if possible, have a taste of it.
Few Asian grocery stores are around my route so my search begins.
Thank you for sharing.

You can find more info in the Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitaya
Wikipedia says it is grown in southeast Asia, but dragonfruit / pitaya is native to the Pacific coasts of Central America, although it has been cultivated in other areas in recent years. GOOD LUCK finding it! 🙂

Woah, this is interesting 😳 🤔.
I have asked few people about it, starting with my colleagues.
The best bet I have gotten is to visit a spar supermarket owned by Asians.
Another option is to visit the Indian Village or their market square around my office.
I have been engaged since morning.
Once I get the opportunity, I will check the Indian Market Square around my office.
If I get it,I'm going to come back with a feedback.
If not, on Monday, I will search further for it.
Just curious about the fruit 🤔 😋

I haven't come across this fruit so far in my area of residence but I plan to do more research on finding out which store could have it in my country.

USD $5

you can get a Kilo or two of that dragon fruit here in my place, but considering the transportation cost, and the tarrif, I think the one that cause it to be very expensive there. the outer skin will be more reddish in color the one that we have here
I am not really a big fan of this fruit though.

Yes, I agree that transportation costs & tariffs are probably the reasons for the higher price here. The fruit I got was much more red on the outside than appears in my photos — my lighting at the time was not ideal. 😕 Thanks for commenting! 😊

I love dragon fruit. It’s pretty readily available here so I’m lucky. I use it in a marinade for a chicken dish I came up with. Very tasty

These fruit I find very delicious and pick up a few from my local Asian or non-Asian grocers 6 to 8 times a year. They may be imported but since most grocers carry this fruit I can easily find a deal or two.

What an interesting idea, to check an Asian grocery shop! I don't live near one, but I come close to one a couple times each year when I go to a nearby city. I'll have to keep that in mind! Thanks for the suggestion! 🙂

I didn't know about this fruit. It doesn't exist here in my country. I hope I can try it someday. Thanks for showing it to us!

Not so long ago, I had not seen it in my area, either. I think it was only in the bigger cities, and I live outside of a small town. So, perhaps one day, it will come to your area, too! 🙂

I really enjoyed reading this! I love how you described the dragonfruit — it does look like something from another world 😄 I’ve tried both red and white varieties too, and you’re right, the red one is definitely more flavorful! Still, both are such fun fruits to try.

I wonder about the first human to ever eat dragonfruit — what did they think, and what made them want to try to eat it...? 😂 Thanks for the comment! 😊

Haha, true! 😄 I’ve wondered that too — maybe they were just curious about how something that looks so unique would taste! Thanks for sharing that thought, it made me smile. 😊🐉

Yes, I agree red variety of dragon fruit is more flavorful than any other varieties. I am also glad that you like this fruit because it is also one of my favorites.
