Canadian government reaches deal with Google with Online News Act

Google and Meta have been making money from stealing Canadian content produced by Canadian journalist with no effort made to compensate original content producers.

Today an agreement has been put in place where Google will contribute a minimum of $100 million that will go to original content providers. In this case it will be mostly going to Canadian government since CBC is a crown corporation.

Now Meta still thinks it is fair game to steal content to benefit their bottom line. They are not negotiating with the government. Another reason for me to avoid Meta and I suggest others also avoid doing business with this anti-democratic company. Last year I deleted my Facebook account because of reports that came out that they knowingly contributed to spreading content that led to kids committing suicide.

I hope to see other counties challenge these two mega companies. It is bad enough that they forces small companies out of business and now they see no obligation to compensate original content providers.

It is not a huge win for Canada but it is a start when combating crooked companies.

I hate that big tech firms steal content.

I do not feel that this extortion act is a good move. The extortion act will give the Canadian Government a huge slush fund that politicians will use to reward people friendly to their political objectives.

Little, if any of the funds, will go to independent creators.

CBC.ca will get a boat load of money. Independent sites will have to compete against a state subsidized firm ... which is very hard to do.

You may be correct, I don't know for sure. A bit of wait and see for now. These things take time to unfold and often involves secret deals. Well, secret that eventually come out. How long it takes depends on the amount of propaganda traffic churning and the noise it generates.

I believe it is not very much money that Google is agreeing to contribute to reporters, journalist, etc In a way, I think Google went along with some financial contribution in hope they would fair better by whatever regulations that may get enforced. Something has to be done and it is because of geed that government is forces to take a position.

Now, Zuck, his ego would never allow him to care for anyone but himself. Much like the Orange Jesus in US. !lol

What's the difference between a poor man and a feather pillow?
One is hard up, the other is soft down.
