Interesting observation, thanks for mentioning me here @zakludick. If I'm not mistaken, those are larvae of the spitfire sawfly. They always stick together wherever they go, forming a line or sticking together as seen in the picture. One of the functions of their togetherness is to protect themselves from predators, by moving together they look bigger and predators have a hard time eating them.

I have seen them before then, in the bush but they were in a long single line head to tail, it was a bit !WEIRD back then too

Yes, it does look weird when we first see it. And one more thing you need to know, if it feels threatened the larvae will release a liquid that resembles saliva and smells bad.
