In the 80s, one of the most intense musical movements took place in Venezuela, where groups from countless trends emerged. Since I was in my 20s, I was naturally part of that, and I must confess that even though I leaned towards Caracas' traditional music—música cañonera—I was closely involved with and heavily influenced by the punk, ska, and new wave movements.

Although many might find it hard to believe, the image my group, Los Cañoneros, projected was inspired by the new wave aesthetic.

In that regard, the greatest exponent was undoubtedly Pedro Pérez Show, better known as PPS. They were the first band to bring the 'New Wave' to Venezuelan radio and television (such as on the famous Show de Fantástico), transforming the visual and sonic aesthetic of national pop-rock.

En los años 80 se produjo en Venezuela uno de los movimientos musicales más intensos en el que afloraron grupos de muchísimas tendencias. Yo que estaba en mis 20, por supuesto, fui parte de eso y debo confesar que aunque yo me fui por el lado de la música caraqueña, la cañonera, tuve mucho que ver y tuve mucha influencia de los movimientos punk, ska y new wave.

Aunque a muchos les cueste creerlo, la imagen que manejaba mi grupo, Los Cañoneros, estaba inspirada en la estética new wave*.

En esa línea el máximo exponente fue, sin duda, Pedro Pérez Show, mejor conocido como PPS, quien fue la primera banda en traer la "Nueva Ola" a las radios y la televisión venezolana (como en el famoso Show de Fantástico), cambiando la estética visual y sonora del pop-rock nacional.

The lyrics are an exercise in humor and individual freedom. Pedro Pérez sings about everyday eccentricity, with phrases describing absurd situations (such as wearing shoes around his neck or doing exercises with his feet in his face) to tell the world that he doesn't care about others' judgment. It is an anthem for 'the one who is different and enjoys it.'

La letra es un ejercicio de humor y libertad individual. Pedro Pérez canta sobre la excentricidad cotidiana, con frases que describen situaciones absurdas (como ponerse los zapatos en el cuello o hacer ejercicios con los pies en la cara) para decirle al mundo que no le importa el juicio ajeno. Es el himno de "el que es diferente y lo disfruta".

Un clavel

"Un clavel" is a track that draws directly from the urgency of Punk (Sex Pistols) and the rhythmic experimentation of The Clash, merging rock energy with reggae cadences. Its short and catchy structure gives it the feel of an advertising jingle, designed to stick in your mind instantly.

"Un clavel" es una pieza que bebe directamente de la urgencia del Punk (Sex Pistols) y la experimentación rítmica de The Clash, fusionando la energía del rock con cadencias de reggae. Su estructura corta y pegajosa le da ese aire de jingle publicitario, diseñado para quedarse grabado en la mente de inmediato.

Just like 'Un clavel,' 'Sí y No' has a minimalist and direct structure. The repetition of the chorus works in an almost hypnotic way, designed for the radio format of the time.

This song, like most of their repertoire, did not aim to be a social protest, but rather a piece of modern and sophisticated pop.

Al igual que "Un clavel", "Sí y No" tiene una estructura minimalista y directa. La repetición del coro funciona de forma casi hipnótica, diseñada para el formato radial de la época.

Esta canción, al igual que la mayoría de su repertorio, no buscaba ser una protesta social, sino una pieza de pop moderno y sofisticado.
