Lenín Pulgar

In my previous post, I performed a romantic gaita by the Zulian composer Lenín Pulgar. Perhaps it would have been a great opportunity to record two more songs and do this #threetunetuesday performing live. However, it didn't cross my mind at the time, so I thought it would be a good idea now to curate a selection of the three most important romantic gaitas (in my opinion) by this composer.

The three I’ve selected were massive hits in Venezuela and, as I mentioned in my last post, they were so successful that they eventually led the composer to form his own group dedicated to performing romantic gaitas. Although Lenín Pulgar wasn't the first to write a romantic gaita, he was certainly the one who set the trend and created a very distinctive style.

En mi publicación pasada interpreté una gaita romántica del compositor zuliano Lenín Pulgar. Quizá hubiera sido una buena oportunidad para grabar dos gaitas más y hacer este #threetunetuesday cantando en vivo. Pero no se me ocurrió en el momento y ahora pensé que sería buena idea hacer una selección de las tres gaitas románticas más importantes (a mi modo de ver) de este compositor.

Las tres que seleccioné fueron superhits en Venezuela y, tal como lo comenté en la publicación pasada, tuvieron tanto éxito que finalmente condujeron a que el compositor creara su propia agrupación para dedicarse a interpretar gaitas románticas. Aunque Lenín Pulgar no fue el primero en escribir una gaita romántica, sí fue el que creó una tendencia y un estilo muy particular.

Linda ilusión

This was the gaita I performed in my previous post (this time with the full instrumentation of a gaita group), and it was the first one I heard from this composer, Linda Ilusión (Beautiful Illusion). It was recorded by the group that established this style, Rincón Morales, featuring the vocals of Fernando Rincón. The album was released in 1980, back when I was in my "gaita period," and that group was one of my favorites.

Esta fue la gaita que interpreté en mi post pasado (aquí sí con todos los instrumentos de un grupo de gaitas) y fue la primera que conocí de este compositor, Linda Ilusión . Fue grabada por el grupo que impuso este estilo de gaitas, Rincón Morales, en la voz de Fernando Rincón. El disco salió en 1980, cuando yo estaba en mi "período gaitero" y ese grupo era uno de mis preferidos.

Nunca es Tarde para Amar

The following year, in 1981, one of the most influential gaitas of all time was born. "Nunca es tarde para amar" (It is never too late to love) was recorded by Rincón Morales, but this time featuring the vocals of Jesús Terán "Chavín"—one of the greatest exponents of Zulia's gaita and a truly gifted voice.

Al año siguiente, en 1981, nació una de las gaitas que más trascendencia ha tenido. Nunca es tarde para amar fue grabada por Rincón Morales, pero en esta oportunidad fue en la voz de Jesús Terán "Chavín", uno de los máximos exponentes de la gaita zuliana, una voz privilegiada.

Tuve que amarte en Silencio

As you might expect, such successful songs always find other performers who want to record their own versions, and Lenín Pulgar's repertoire is no exception. The original version of "Tuve que amarte en silencio" (I had to love you in silence) was recorded by Rincón Morales in 1982, performed by Fernando Rincón.

Neguito Borjas, one of the most prominent singer-songwriters in the genre and director of one of the most successful groups, El Gran Coquivacoa, released a compilation album of gaita hits in 2016 and included this song featuring his own vocals.

Como es de suponer, canciones tan exitosas encuentran siempre a otros intérpretes que quieran hacer sus propias versiones y el repertorio de Lenín Pulgar no es la excepción. La versión original de Tuve que amarte en Silencio fue grabada por Rincón Morales en 1982, interpretada por Fernando Rincón.

Neguito Borjas, que es uno de los más destacados cantautores de la gaita y director de uno de los grupos más exitosos, como lo es El Gran Coquivacoa, realizó en 2016 un disco recopilatorio de grandes éxitos de la gaita y allí incluyó esta canción en su propia voz.
