@la-colmena: A necessary step for our community | Un paso necesario por nuestra comunidad
Reactivating @la-colmena: why we returned and where we are headed
I recently mentioned that these past few days have been technically intense. Reactivating the @la-colmena witness was not simply a matter of turning a server back on; it was a process of analyzing the profitability and the future of the project. Those who closely follow the Hive ecosystem know that the price of the coin is at historically low levels, which forces node management to be extremely efficient (and well-planned) to avoid generating losses.
Previously, we used Privex services. They offer a very interesting proposal called Hive-in-a-box, which uses someguy123's package (hive-docker) to greatly simplify node configuration, optimizing it to run with few resources. It was thanks to that technical ease that we were able to start at the time, without prior experience or knowledge. However, the cost of that service is high if you are not in a favorable position in the witness ranking. With an unfavorable ranking position and the current market, production rewards simply stopped covering operating expenses, and I had to make the decision to shut down.
Reactivando @la-colmena: por qué volvimos y hacia dónde vamos
Recientemente comenté que estos días han sido de una intensidad técnica importante. Reactivar el testigo de @la-colmena no fue simplemente volver a encender un servidor; fue un proceso de análisis sobre la rentabilidad y el futuro del proyecto. Quienes siguen de cerca lo que es el ecosistema de Hive saben que el precio de la moneda está en niveles históricamente bajos, y esto obliga a que la gestión de un nodo sea extremadamente eficiente (y bien pensada) para no generar pérdidas.
Anteriormente, utilizábamos los servicios de Privex. Ellos manejan una propuesta muy interesante llamada Hive-in-a-box, que utiliza el paquete de someguy123 (hive-docker) para simplificar enormemente la configuración de un nodo, optimizándolo para funcionar con pocos recursos. Fue gracias a esa facilidad técnica que pudimos empezar en su momento, sin experiencia ni conocimientos previos. Sin embargo, el costo de ese servicio resulta alto si no te encuentras en una posición favorable en el ranking de testigos. Con una posición no favorable en el ranking y con el mercado actual, las recompensas de producción simplemente dejaron de cubrir los gastos operativos, y tuve que tomar la decisión de apagar.
The push for the comeback
That "blackout" seemed permanent, as it was a closure due to a lack of viable options. What changed the situation was communication with other colleagues. I want to mention @yonnathang from @hispapro, who was the first to "light the fuse." By telling me about the company they work with and showing me that there were infrastructure alternatives capable of being self-sustaining even in this market, I began to see the return as something possible (and desired). Shortly after, @eddiespino from @aliento also recommended the same provider, which gave me the necessary confidence to take the step.
Interestingly, the node we have now is more powerful and has more memory than the previous one, and we continue to use the same hive-docker system we already knew, but under a cost structure that allows us to attempt sustainability once again.
The importance of representation
Currently, we are only four active Hispanic witnesses. This is a minimal, almost symbolic representation for the number of Spanish-speaking users on this blockchain. Being low in the ranking means producing very few blocks and, therefore, having fewer resources to strengthen the @la-colmena account.
Our goal now is to enter the Top 50. We have never reached that position; our best moment was around 70th place, which is why the previous node was not profitable. Reaching the Top 50 is not a matter of status or ego, but of pure operability for three reasons:
- Sustainability: Ensuring the node pays for itself so the project stops being a personal financial burden or draining the project's curation rewards.
- Strengthening HP: Everything the witness generates goes directly toward increasing @la-colmena's Hive Power and financing recruitment and retention projects for Hive.
- Voting Power: If we move up the ranking, our capacity to vote for Spanish content increases. Although we prioritize curation in our allied communities (Música, Literatos, and La Colmena), our commitment is to support quality Spanish content anywhere on Hive.
El impulso para el regreso
Ese "apagón" parecía definitivo, pues se trataba de un cierre por falta de opciones viables. Lo que cambió la situación fue la comunicación con otros colegas. Quiero mencionar a @yonnathang de @hispapro, quien fue el primero en "prender la mecha". Al hablarme de la empresa con la que ellos trabajan y mostrarme que existían alternativas de infraestructura capaces de ser autosustentables incluso en este mercado, empecé a ver el regreso como algo posible (y deseado). Poco después, @eddiespino de @aliento también me recomendó el mismo proveedor, lo que me dio la seguridad necesaria para dar el paso.
Curiosamente, el nodo que tenemos ahora es más potente y tiene más memoria que el anterior, y seguimos utilizando el mismo sistema de hive-docker que ya conocíamos, pero bajo una estructura de costos que nos permite intentar la sustentabilidad de nuevo.
La importancia de la representación
Actualmente somos solo cuatro testigos hispanos activos. Es una representación mínima, casi simbólica, para la cantidad de usuarios que hablamos español en esta blockchain. Estar abajo en el ranking significa producir muy pocos bloques y, por ende, tener menos recursos para fortalecer la cuenta de @la-colmena.
Nuestra meta ahora es entrar en el Top 50. Nunca hemos llegado a esa posición; nuestro mejor momento fue cerca del puesto 70, y por eso el nodo anterior no era rentable. Llegar al Top 50 no es una cuestión de estatus o ego, sino de operatividad pura por tres razones:
- Sustentabilidad: Lograr que el nodo se pague solo y el proyecto deje de ser una carga económica personal o que se lleve las recompensas de curación del proyecto.
- Fortalecimiento del HP: Todo lo que genera el testigo va directo a subir el Hive Power de @la-colmena y a financiar proyectos de captación y fidelización a Hive.
- Poder de voto: Si subimos en el ranking, nuestra capacidad de votar contenido en español aumenta. Aunque priorizamos la curación en nuestras comunidades aliadas (Música, Literatos y La Colmena), nuestro compromiso es apoyar la calidad en español en cualquier parte de Hive.
A call to action
For this technical effort to be worthwhile and for the node to become truly productive for the community, we need your support through your vote. A witness without votes does not produce blocks, and a witness that does not produce blocks cannot support the growth of the regional ecosystem—that is, our Spanish-speaking community.
