When we talk about Venezuelan music, we usually think of our wonderful folklore or the historical weight of Caribbean salsa. However, there is a before and after in our musical history marked by a group of "gozones" who decided that Venezuela could also be the epicenter of the most sophisticated funk and disco. I'm talking about Los Amigos Invisibles. They were the first Venezuelan group to truly break the mold, daring to create a sound with an "Anglo" soul—designed for the global dancefloor—without losing a single drop of our national essence.

A fundamental part of this success, which many do not know, was the masterful hand of their original manager, Alberto Cabello. I had the privilege of knowing Alberto, who had already left a mark on our rock history as a musician for Sentimiento Muerto. Alberto didn't just see a group of talented boys; he saw a diamond in the rough with the potential to compete in the major leagues of the world. He understood that to transcend, they needed a professional vision that would prevent them from going unnoticed like so many other great Venezuelan bands. His extraordinary work took them to levels we hadn't dreamed of, and it was under that vision that "Arepa 3000: A Venezuelan Journey into Space" was born. For me, this album is the absolute pinnacle of the genre—a masterpiece that remains one of my favorite records of all time.

Cuando hablamos de música venezolana, solemos pensar en nuestro maravilloso folclore o en el peso histórico de la salsa caribeña. Sin embargo, hay un antes y un después en nuestra historia musical marcado por un grupo de "gozones" que decidieron que Venezuela también podía ser el epicentro del funk y el disco más sofisticado. Me refiero a Los Amigos Invisibles. Ellos fueron el primer grupo venezolano en romper verdaderamente el molde, atreviéndose a plantear un sonido con alma "anglo" —diseñado para la pista de baile global— sin perder ni una gota de nuestra esencia nacional.

Parte fundamental de este éxito, que muchos no conocen, fue la mano maestra de su mánager original, Alberto Cabello. Tuve el privilegio de conocer a Alberto, quien ya había dejado una huella en nuestra historia del rock como músico de Sentimiento Muerto. Alberto no solo vio a un grupo de muchachos talentosos; vio un diamante en bruto con potencial para competir en las Grandes Ligas del mundo. Él entendió que para trascender necesitaban una visión profesional que evitara que pasaran inadvertidos como tantos otros grandes grupos venezolanos. Su trabajo extraordinario los llevó a niveles que no habíamos soñado, y fue bajo esa visión que nació "Arepa 3000: A Venezuelan Journey into Space". Para mí, este disco es la cúspide absoluta del género, una obra maestra que sigue siendo uno de mis discos preferidos de todos los tiempos.

1. Sexy

This track is the perfect definition of what Los Amigos Invisibles represent. From the first chords of the guitar and that "groovy" bass that seems to talk to you, "Sexy" transports us to a futuristic party where the Venezuelan "guaracha" meets Jamiroquai and Prince. Included in the legendary Arepa 3000, this song broke all the barriers of the time. It was the proof that a Venezuelan band could produce a world-class sound, with a mix and mastering that sounded giant in any club in New York or London.

What I love most about "Sexy" is how it manages to be incredibly sophisticated and technically impeccable while maintaining that irreverent and slightly "clownish" humor that characterizes us. It's a song that doesn't take itself too seriously in the lyrics, but is deadly serious in its musical execution. It represents the leap of the belief that "made in Venezuela" could be synonymous with the highest musical avant-garde.

Lo que más me gusta de "Sexy" es cómo logra ser increíblemente sofisticada y técnicamente impecable, manteniendo al mismo tiempo ese humor irreverente y un poco "echao' pa' lante" que nos caracteriza. Es una canción que no se toma demasiado en serio la letra, pero que es mortalmente seria en su ejecución musical. Representa ese salto de que lo "hecho en Venezuela" podía ser sinónimo de la más alta vanguardia musical.

2. Sugga Daddy

Moving forward in time, we find "Sugga Daddy," a track that proves that the "Invisible" essence is timeless. Even with the evolution of the music industry and changes in the lineup, the band's ability to create high-voltage funk remains intact. This song is a lesson in rhythm; the way the drums lock in with the bass creates a foundation that is impossible to ignore.

The inclusion of this track in my selection is to highlight that the path the band started wasn't a flash in the pan. "Sugga Daddy" maintains that "Anglo" vibe of the 80s but with a contemporary production. It is a song that breathes luxury and fun, reminding us that Los Amigos Invisibles are, perhaps, our best export product when it comes to high-quality pop-funk.

3. Qué rico

To close this trio, I chose "Qué rico," a song that perfectly summarizes the concept of the "Invisible Gozadera." This track is an explosion of brass and percussion that invites you to lose yourself on the dance floor. It represents the liberation of the Venezuelan musician from the complex of "only doing local music." When you listen to "Qué rico," you realize that there are no borders; the music speaks a universal language of joy.

This song is also a tribute to that "potential" Alberto Cabello saw from the beginning. He knew they could be a "party band" without losing their musical prestige. The complexity of the arrangements hidden behind such a direct and fun title is a testament to the band's genius. It's the perfect closing because it leaves you with that feeling of pride: knowing that from our "Arepa" culture, a sound was born that conquered the world and opened doors for all the alternative musicians who came after.
