The marks that tell our story
When you look at this face the first thing that catches you are the eyes, but then your attention shifts to the two tribal marks carved on the cheeks. These are not just marks they are stories, history and identity crested on skin. In Nigeria, tribal marks were once a common practice among different ethnic groups for so many reasons among the Yoruba, they were used to identify peoples lineage or family. For the Hausa and some other tribes, they served both cultural and spiritual purposes, i read that they were also used In some communities as a way of protection during wars and slave trade helping people recognize their lineage.
But as times changed a whole lot of things changed, people’s mind became enlightened, thoughts were influenced and same happened to the meaning of these marks. Today they carry mixed feelings in our society because some see them as painful scars of tradition while others see them as symbols of pride and heritage. It could be seen a controversial topic but it’s clearly alive.
This drawing is my way of keeping that conversation alive, i had a million thoughts when I was working on it, making sure that every stroke of charcoal was shading memory, history and identity. The face reflects the resilience of Nigerians carrying the weight of the past but still staring firmly into the future.
In a world where modernity often erases tradition, I believe it’s important we don’t forget the cultural practices that shaped us. Tribal marks may no longer be as common but they remind us of where we come from and also the families, the clans, struggles, and the beauty of being a Nigerian.
Just like this artwork i see Nigeria as a blend of pain and beauty or scars and strength, but amidst it all you can see us still standing strong like we have accepted our past with dignity and pride no matter how heavy it feels.
Now what are your own thoughts on the idea of tribal marks? Being Nigerian or non nigerian i just want to know what you think.
