What could possibly go wrong?

"Mom you are overreacting" Ray screamed and slammed the door behind him.
This is one of the few times Betty admired her Nanny who practically raised her because her parents were seldom in town. She could remember the first time she saw the most terrifying encounter in her whole life. Ogechi, the first daughter of Nanny Oriaku had just raised her voice on her mum. Maybe she learnt it by watching Betty raise her voice at her mum and how Betty's mum would apologize afterwards.

"Mama, please give me a break, you are always on my neck." Ogechi screamed.
Betty was with Nanny Ori at the kitchen helping her prepare for dinner. Nanny Ori was doing the dishes, Betty thought in her mind "well, parents could be a lot sometines, i guess Nanny will have to give Ogechi a break to cool off, that's exactly what mum would do."

Nanny Ori immediately dropped the plates in her hand and all of a sudden her voice changed.

"Ogechi, i just have five more plates to wash, before i drop my last plate, i want you down here now." Nanny Ori screamed.

Betty didn't know which was more terrifying. Was it the fact that she just watched her Nanny who she thought had the most admirable voice change into something from the horror movies.
Or the fact that before she recover from the shock, Ogechi who was pissed off was already down stairs. That was the only time throughout her childhood she saw Ogechi disrespect her Mum.

"I would have asked Nanny Ori to teach me how she did that." Betty exclaimed.

Ray had wanted to join his mates for an all day unlicensed racing round the state. Betty like any sane mother was adamantly against it. Ray, always saw his mum like a kill joy, one who was always downbeat.

"You know mum, i don't know if it's because you are a nurse but you treat me like a patient, I'm your son for Christ sake. Mum, you are overreacting."

Betty was so tired of raising this child because it's always from one problem to another. She thought to herself what to do to make this boy know how risky what he was planning on doing was.

Ray's anger for his mum began 7 years ago when he found out that she didn't know whose Ray's Father was. That really unknotted an underlying anger within him and since then he never respected his mum again. It's been 8 years and it seems his anger was getting stronger by the day.

Ray walked into the hospital with his eye he scans the environment for his mum. Immediately he saw her coming out from one of the rooms and walked up to her.
"Hey, Mum its time for my soccer game, i need a little cash for a hangout after the game." He said.

"I'm a little busy now, Ray, just sit in this room and wait for a few minutes let me finish what i have in hand" she said as she walked out.

Ray walked into the room and there a man in his early thirty's just lying there on the bed. Ray sat down on the chair just a little distant away from the patient. The room was usually quiet till the stranger decided to break the silence, "Hey, I'm Edward"

Ray didn't disappoint as usual, always his snubby self. Edward knew that this kid must really have alot of anger in him to be this way and he decided to keep to himself and not try to pry further.

Betty Came into the room thirty minutes later, "hey Ray, I'm going to give you this cash if you promise me you won't go for the unlicensed racing round the state." Betty urged.

"Mum, why is it that when i need you the most you are never there for me. At least if you had known who my Dad was i would have ran to him now for help. Who knows he may even join me for the game since my mum never comes for my games" Ray said still maintaining a calm composure but anyone could tell that he meant every single word he said.

"Its just a little race, what could go wrong in just having a little fun?" He added.

That statement got a slight chuckle from Edward who had all along kept quiet while the mum and child exchanged words.
" And why are you laughing?" Ray asked.

"You know i just remembered those were my last words before i ended up here" he said.
Please Nurse Betty, how long have i been here i know you are one of the oldest nurses in this hospital? Edward asked.

"17 years" she replied.

Young man I've been lying on this bed for 17 years, the only thing has changed is just the hospital meals and sheets, they change my room once in a while to give me a new feel.

"H...h..how?" Ray stuttered.

I think i was around your age, 15 or 16. I really liked this girl Roselyn and the amazing fact was that i knew deep down that she liked me too. My friends and i had this mountain we normally hangout, we stay there away from prying eyes, drink and dance till its too late to see the next person beside you.

So one good evening, my friend Joseph brought Roselyn to the hangout spot. Roselyn happened to be his cousin, so she came with a few of her friends. So Duke really loved mountain climbing and he brought his gears with him and suggested we spike the fun a little bit.

Joseph warned me that Duke was a professional, his dad always took him all around the world especially to africa where they climb mountain and spend time together.
"You are totally clueless, its not just about climbing mountains with gears you need experience incase something also goes wrong up there" Joseph advised.

"What could possibly go wrong, Joe?" I asked.

To cut the long story short, the belt and hook was loosed it seemed I didn't tight it well before i started climbing and it got loosed and broke when i got to a very distant height.

17 years in different beds could go wrong if anything happens to you while acting childish. Young man I don't know why you hate your mum, but any decision she made was done when she knew little, she knows better now. Don't judge her on face value of her past. You should be the first to forgive her even she even forgives herself.

The look on Ray's face showed that he really had been acting like a jerk this past years.

It is good when children are taught from people's mistakes, Ray must have learned a lot from Edwards life. Good story.
