The good old days made me better
2018, i got admission into the university. I was clueless and naive. But i wasn't totally ignorant, i could say because i was in a boarding school in my secondary education. So i had a little experience in living and thriving alone, far away from home.
Part of the reasons i was clueless was the fact that i was given admission three weeks before exam, and few weeks after matriculation.
So yes, i didn't have the pleasure of matriculating. I used the first week to register into school. Most of us can attest to the rigorous procedures it takes to finish your clearance. Some students finish in two weeks or even a month but mine was a week because i was almost the only student doing that at the time.
I never knew why my admission came so late and the fact that they didn't even give me my choice course was even more alarming.
Well, my lateness in resuming showed in my results the first year because i still had to find my footings. I had a carryover course. Only one though. But i slightly scaled through others.
The day i saw F in my results, I was speechless. I felt like a village champion that relocated to the city and saw what competition looked like. The silver lining was that i had a roommate who was a final year student. I thank God for that union because he schooled me about 30% of unknown knowledge.
I checked my GPA after my first year, it was 2.65. i knew the possibility of a first class was no longer in view for me. So, i had to make another plan to get a high 2.1.
I was ready and serious to make my mark. I was the quiet type. The No one knows he's here till he speaks type.
Before i knew it i already had a clique i was rolling with.
Guess what, they were good students. Because i figured i would need help to get information to some certain things, so the people that would do that were serious students.
You know that they have different levels of serious students. There are those who are serious but it doesn't show in their results. There are those that are serious and their results is just good. But there are those who are serious and their results screams it louuudddd.
Now the clique i mentioned, they were in the second team. They were good students with good results. And with a GPA of 2.65, i didn't want a good result because i could mistakenly remain in 2nd class lower.
So, i figured out that there was a guy in my department who still maintained a first class in year one and is still keeping it after the first semester in the second year.
Guess what???
Stop guessing. I befriended him asap.
I already sound like parents in the 80's.
But i actually did, it was more like a divine connection. I really admired his results and really wanted a leaf from his book.
This guy is the person your parents normally tell you to befriend a night before you go to school the next day. He was all of that in human form. The fact that he was a strong Christian was the cake itself.
This was his belief "i have to be excellent academically, so if people ask me how, i would boldly direct them to God." He was the one to opened my eyes to the fact that a Christian shouldn't be failing in class.
We became very close. At some point we even became roomates. We are still friends till tomorrow, and always will be. In fact he will be my best man in my wedding😂😂😂. I'm kidding though.
My grades kicked off immediately. He taught me how he read. Before we became roommates, during exam periods, i come to squat with him and we read together..it became serious when my clique also joined me for that. His house became a sanctuary for Excellent students.
Although he was the one with the highest GPA in the department but i was the fifth best in the department. I never believed that just by association, one could be a better student.
I wasn't really popular in the department but i was influential because i was a friend of someone who was a bright student.
I will stop by saying this "learn to admit when you don't know and be humble enough to learn even though the person is younger or older than you."
Getting a good friend is very crucial at these stage, bad one could take you down to hell and the good one to the heaven, whether its about the studies, materialistic things or heavenly stuff, applies everywhere.
You were fortunate to get one like him, cherish it for the lifetime.
Yeah true
This hit deep. I can’t stop thinking, what if your admission had come earlier? Would you have still met your roommate? Or found that first class friend? It's funny how the things that feel like setbacks can end up leading us to the right people. Yours is proof.
True talk
Hi @venom2951. Please capitalize the pronoun "I" in your stories. Writing it in lower case is an error that affects the quality of your work.
Thank you and keep writing.
Thanks for the correction
A good friend helps a lot I can say the same for me it alot of stress getting into school
An interesting story and I also buy the quote that ends it. Good perspective from there.
You must have lots of memories from university. I'm glad you have remained close with your friend from university as well.
Hmmm, let me even imagine how that could look. It looks like what used to happen in Nigerian University in those days. If care is not taken, someone might have admission in the second semester
In school, always having people who do well academically as friends is beneficial to our own academic performance, I'm not gonna lie, because we get to learn and study together. Then it makes room for questions if that arise.
