Lesson learnt the hard way

"This is a campus zone and it's always risky to go out in the evening, I won't advise you to walk about in the evening time". These were the words that Replayed in my mind two weeks later. I regretted not listening to my family friend who had been on campus two years before me.

I thought it was like home, where i would come out in the night to get something for myself no matter how late it was.

That day i advised myself to get something's on my way back from lectures. I didn't take my own advise, i just bought junks and headed home. In the evening hunger came knocking in the door with so much anger like i hadn't fed it.

So against all advise i threw caution to the wind and decided to stroll round to get something to eat that evening. My family friend knew he couldn't stop me so he decided to escort me there just for safety measures.

Just 200 steps from my lodge, we stepped into a dark region, i could see some boys who i thought were students like us walking behind us. So i felt a little safe and scared too although i tried my best to hide it.

Before i would realise what was going on two other guys stepped out from nowhere. Before i would turn to look at my family friends, he had disappeared. He ran so fast that even the guys didn't bother chasing him.

In a twinkle of an eye i heard his voice "no comot this night ohh, this zone no safe at all" translated "don't leave this night, this area is not safe at all"

I wish i listened to him. I prayed to God to disappear. All those bible stories i wanted to feature in one of them right now. But God had been talking since, i didn't listen. I just wanted to leave here alive.

The guys surrounded me, asked me if i was a new student. I guess they knew from my innocence and naivety. They asked a bunch of sincere questions and let me go. I was surprised though, i thought to my maybe this guys had grown a conscience.

Before i would turn back, i didn't see them. I wasn't bothered, to show that i wasn't. I immediately increased my walking step and started running. I was so scared. I stopped all of a sudden because i started feeling an empty pocket. I had put my phone in my pocket before stepping out of the lodge.

That was when i discovered that i had been pickpocketed. My family friend walked up to me and told me "i warned you against this and you didn't listen. Did they beat you? He asked".

"No, they just stole my phone" I responded heart broken.

"Let us go back there and collect that phone back what kind of nonsense is this" he started shouting.

I was just quiet looking at him in my mind I was like "you wey leave me run" 😂😂😂😂.

Lolz, you should be thankful it's not more than stealing. What if they were kidnappers too. Nice job!

Wow..that must be painful losing your phone due to your disobedience, but at the same time, it was a lesson learnt, mostly the hard way.

You were lucky, I must say, atleast it was just the phone they took, some people lost their lives in thesame situation. Some areas are very dangerous. It is wise to always listen to advise from those who have stayed there for some time.

So glad you weren't hurt, @venom2951!

Just a tip: We ask writers to aim for a minimum of 750 words in each story, as we have found that this threshold is important for full developed stories. For example, you can always add more information to set the scene. You could describe the character traits of your friend. You could add more dialogue. Stories feel more complete with these kinds of details.

I'm glad you're safe. Perhaps in the future, you and all of us should listen to some advice or counsel. Because some people in the stable give advice based on experience.
