Tempo will operate as a permissionless blockchain from the start, allowing anyone to deploy tokens and transact. While some believe real-world adoption and serious institutions necessitate sacrificing base layer neutrality, Tempo disagrees and maintains its unbiased foundation.

Tempo's goal is permissionless validation, smart contract deployment, and usage akin to Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc. Though it will start with a permissioned validator set, decentralization will follow. Features are being built to aid compliance for entities like asset issuers, all while retaining a neutral base layer, a principle strongly upheld.

As mainstream adoption of crypto grows, there’s a risk of embracing permissioned systems. Tempo aims to guide adoption to maintain permissionlessness in solutions addressing specific payment needs.

Why choose L1 over an Ethereum L2?

Tempo is built with urgency to meet demand, avoiding dependencies, including waiting on Ethereum L1's progress. While possible on L2s, these aspects can be challenging or slow to implement and involve dependencies.
