Nah, it's actually not the ostrich! The largest egg is laid by the whale shark. Crazy, right? Those eggs are massive compared to anything on land.
The ostrich lays the largest egg of any currently living animal. However, the extinct elephant bird (Aepyornis) laid the largest egg of any species ever known to exist. An ostrich egg typically weighs about 1.4 kg (3.1 lb), while the largest recorded ostrich egg weighed 2.589 kg (5 lb 11.36 oz).
