CHILDREN AS CONTENT vs My View.

Hmmmm… on a YES or NO context this topic will always feel controversial or rather, it already is but I’m glad there’s now an urgency to explain why we choose whatever stance we take. And this urgency doesn’t lead us to extremes, it leads us to the middle ground, which is analysis, but not a one faceted or one phased approach to an answer.

In our world today, this issue has risen prominently to a point where it is becoming normal and acceptable for children to be used as content, rather than pausing to deliberate the consequences. The domination and success of the internet and the modern era has made almost every civilization-looking act or trend appear normal and even be regarded as “development”. But don’t you think this can be controlled? I mean… just accepting whatever comes into society as a trend via social media?

Sometimes I even wish we just had the basic internet and WWW space without the entertainment overload just like Instagram, TikTok, reels and all… it’s nice, yes, but using children for content actually has risks that outweigh the protections. And we will find out…

Advantages of Child Content Creation

Actually, I won’t despise the positivity in it or deny the real benefits attached to it aside MONEY! Because in our world today, money is the bone of contention for almost every act or thought, even when it’s wrong, as profitability tends to strip humanity out of decisions.

When kids get early access to creativity on such a scale, it helps a lot in building their skills and reception capabilities. In the sense that they start understanding metrics, feedback, engagement and what’s more acceptable to their audience. Which means they can already do target creation for a certain aim. That’s a serious skill one that helps them throughout life in many real world ramifications.

Some kids naturally enjoy storytelling, performances, teaching, music, or gaming. So building content around those interests can feel like play rather than work. In the long term, they develop confidence, communication skills, stage presence, and very strong digital literacy. Somehow, it prepares them for the fast approaching digital future ahead of us all, whether we like it or not.

It also helps the family financially if it is properly channeled. Money generated can be used for education, healthcare, or even secured as long-term savings for the child’s future. In some families, this becomes a lifeline and we cannot ignore that reality.

Another benefit is relatability. Other kids feel represented, not ignored, in the digital space. In this digital age, introverted children may feel less alone seeing other kids like them. They learn, they connect, and sometimes they genuinely feel happier. So yes, we can agree — it’s not automatically harmful.

But now… we have to look at the other side.

 ***What Are the Negative Impacts?***

Now this is the section the world keeps ignoring… because humanity is slowly dying. I hope we do better.

Most children at such ages cannot give informed consent. A child cannot truly understand the permanence of the internet yet. They are likely to upload or appear in content that may not even be permissible for public discretion purely because of innocence. They cannot predict future consequences. They cannot safely opt out later when they finally want to live a different life… or the life they actually would have chosen for themselves

It becomes extremely hard when a brand is already built around them. Imagine this lol they can’t stop, because so many business promotions, endorsements, contracts, and deals are already tied to the content they create and the specific audience they attract. At that point, their image becomes public property, or worse, business property, before they can even decide who they want to be.

That’s why many child content creators experience anxiety from performance expectations, pressure to stay relevant, obsession with likes and views, and burnout before they even become adults.

And in this era, misuse of content is rampant. Children are not excluded. I can imagine an innocent boy from a diaper commercial, now 15 years old, angry and confused seeing his naked smiling image still circulating commercially 😂😂. Funny, yes… but deeply disturbing when you think about dignity and privacy.

So you see, this is tough. The merits and demerits are crazy to balance. You can’t completely forfeit one for the other. But one thing feels clear to me children should never be the primary focus as PRODUCTS.

If creativity serves the child, protects their dignity, and prioritizes their mental and emotional health, then maybe there is room for balance. But once profit, algorithms, and pressure take over, we lose the plot.

And maybe that’s the real question we should be asking…
Not “Is child content creation good or bad?”
But “Who is it really serving?”
