RE: 13-10-2025-Mechanical Measurements - The Seismograph [EN]-[IT]

Such an important tool in the study of how the earth works! The data gathered from sites around the world is helping us to better understand the composition of the inner core of the earth . Plus, it does put a number on those pesky earthquakes we get from time to time here in southern California!
Interesting fact about Luigi Palmieri, I didn't realize he designed the early versions of today's instrument. Great review of the math as well today!

Hi thebighigg,
The seismograph is one of those inventions useful for the development of humanity. Basically, when the ground moves, the structure of the seismograph follows that motion and an inertial mass tends to remain stationary while a relative motion arises between the mass and the frame of the seismograph. That motion is then translated into an electrical signal. Regarding the Italian Luigi Palmieri, he was a fundamental pioneer of simograph technology by designing a mercury seismograph.
I'm truly honored to meet a Californian.
As for the seismicity of that area, I think it is quite high, California is on the border between the Pacific plate and the North American plate. I think in California most homes are all wood. A material that can resist earthquakes, certainly much more than concrete.
