The Unpredictable Path to Leadership: A Lesson in Readiness and Humility.
There is a saying that, when you have tried to tell someone to do something and he or she is not trying to adjust to that tune, it is best to let them be because, at some point, reality will hit them, and by then, there will be no one to help them or talk to them about that which they have been doing, which is not good. There is another one that says, You can force a horse to the river, but you can never force it to drink water from the stream. These words are very true because, when they get to this position, they will have no choice but to blend.
Yesterday, I was in our ordination program, where there are different executives who will serve for some time, and then after serving, they will give the mantle of leadership to someone else, whom they feel can take over the legacy they have been building. Before they finish their tenure, most people would have been predicting what the result would be for the next tenure, and some of those we think will be in that post will have been guided on how to do it, but this will be done directly because they won't want them to have any idea if they are the ones taking up the post after they are leaving.
So it happened that there was a guy who belongs to the choir, and he is not really active in the choir loft, and then I tell him most of the time to always come to improve himself, but he won't because he felt he was not competent for the post, which I was thinking he would be given. Sometimes when we go for rehearsal, he's still just busy doing something else, and he won't even attend to the choir.
When reality hit him, he was ordained as the choir master, and then many people were complaining about this because they felt he was not worthy to ascend to the post. Even myself, I was not happy because, to me, he was not part of the choir at all, but when we all complained, there was nothing to be done, and I had to call him and speak to him because he has a lot of work ahead of him, and he has to be very buoyant and outspoken if he really wants to control a lot of people.
So, in life, we can ascend to the throne of a leader at any point in time. Whenever we have the chance to learn, we should always ensure we learn as fast as possible because it will help us very well. No knowledge is a waste because you just have to carry it until you need it. It's not when you now need it, you will now want to learn it. Always make sure you learn and are into whatever you do. No knowledge is a waste; so far, you are learning the right thing.
