Together, they managed to test the battery under real-world conditions, demonstrating that it meets automotive-grade standards.

The key here is that the new battery is semi-solid-state (note not fully solid-state), which uses a stable, gel-like material instead of the liquid used in regular lithium-ion batteries.

The new battery boasts high energy densities of 375 Wh/kg, surpassing the typical range of 200-300 Wh/kg for batteries. This enables any vehicle equipped with it to have a much longer range without sacrificing weight.

The new battery can also charge very fast, with a claimed 15% to 90% charge possible in around 18 minutes at room temperature. The battery also benefits from high power output, with discharge rates of up to four times its capacity per hour (referred to as a “4C rate”).

Semi-solid, not fully solid-state
The battery also has an impressive temperature tolerance, operating efficiently and safely between -22°F (-30°C) and 113°F (45°C). This is not much better than lithium-ion, but solid-state cells lose far less range in cold weather.

Currently, solid-state batteries are often regarded as the “holy grail” of electric vehicle power sources. This is because they promise longer ranges, faster charging, better safety, reduced vehicle weight, and less degradation over time.
