The mausoleum of Theodoric is located in the city of Ravenna (Italy) within a large park. The mausoleum can be reached from the following address: Via delle Industrie, 14 - Ravenna (Italy)
Its construction dates back to the 6th century and it is not known for sure by whom it was built. This mausoleum is considered by many historians to be the most important funerary construction of the Ostrogoths.

La sua costruzione risale al VI secolo e non si sa con certezza da chi fu costruito. Questo mausoleo è ritenuto da molti storici la più importante costruzione funeraria degli Ostrogoti.

This monument is a wonderful testimony to the period of the Ostrogoths and the history that swept through Italy during 500 AD.
The Ostrogoths were a Germanic tribe that changed the destiny of the Roman Empire.
They defeated the barbarian Odoacer who deposed Romulus Augustus, the last Roman emperor. Some historians attribute the final fall of the Western Roman Empire to the rise of the Ostrogoths. That is why this testimony of the reign of the Ostrogoths is so precious.

Questo monumento è una meravigliosa testimonianza del periodo degli Ostrogoti e della storia che attraversò l’Italia durante il 500 d.C...
Gli Ostrogoti furono una tribù germanica che cambiarono il destino dell’impero romano.
Essi sconfissero il barbaro Odoacre il quale depose Romolo Augusto, l'ultimo imperatore romano. Alcuni storici attribuiscono all’ascesa degli Ostrogoti la caduta definitiva dell'Impero romano d'Occidente. Ecco perchè questa testimonianza del regno degli Ostrogoti è così preziosa.

Theodoric, called 'the Great', was the king of the Ostrogoths and ruler of the Ostrogothic Kingdom in Italy around 500 AD. He killed Odoacer during a banquet after a pact had apparently been made between the two rulers. After this event, Theodoric had the Ostrogoths invade the cities of Pavia and Ravenna, making the Ostrogothic Kingdom strong.
The Ostrogothic Kingdom, also called Regnum Italiae (Kingdom of Italy), was founded by the Ostrogothic Germanic people on the Italian peninsula between 490 and 550 AD.

Teodorico, detto "il Grande", fu il re degli Ostrogoti e sovrano del Regno ostrogoto in Italia intorno al 500 d.C.. Egli uccise Odoacre durante un banchetto dopo che sembrava fosse stato stipulato un patto di convivenza tra i due sovrani. Dopo questo evento Teodorico fece insidiare gli Ostrogoti nella città di Pavia e Ravenna, rendendo vigoroso il Regno ostrogoto.
Il Regno ostrogoto, chiamato anche Regnum Italiae (Regno d'Italia), fu fondato dal popolo germanico ostrogoto nella penisola italiana tra il 490 e il 550 d.C..

Of all the buildings in Ravenna, this is the only one built with blocks of Aurisina stone, while the other buildings are all brick. The weight of this structure is estimated to be around 290 tonnes and various theories have developed as to how these blocks were transported and moved.

Tra tutte le costruzioni che sono presenti a Ravenna questa è l’unica costruita con blocchi di pietra d'Aurisina, mentre le altre costruzioni sono tutte in mattoni. Il peso di questa struttura è stimato attorno alle 290 tonnellate e si sono sviluppate varie teorie per come sono stati trasportati e movimentati questi blocchi.

The shape of this mausoleum echoes the typology of other Roman mausoleums. The mausoleum has a decagonal plan and is on two levels.
The building, however, has one striking feature and that is its roof. In fact, the canopy is formed by a single monolith, made of Aurisina stone, 10 metres in diameter and 3 metres high. The weight of this dome is estimated to be close to 200 tonnes.

La forma di questo mausoleo riprende la tipologia di altri mausolei romani. Il mausoleo presenta una pianta decagonale ed è a due livelli.
L’edificio però ha una caratteristica davvero sorprendente ed è la sua copertura. Infatti la calotta è formata da un unico monolite, in pietra Aurisina, di 10 metri di diametro e di 3 metri di altezza. Il peso di questa calotta è stimato vicino alle 200 tonnellate.

This mausoleum was included by Unesco in the list of Italian World Heritage Sites as an important testimony of Italian early Christian monuments.

Questo mausoleo è stato inserito dall’Unesco nella lista dei siti italiani Patrimonio dell’Umanità come importante testimonianza di monumenti paleocristiani italiani.

This important funerary construction was built at the behest of Theodoric as his own burial place and various historical surveys date this mausoleum to around 520 AD.

Questa importante costruzione funeraria fu fatta costruire per volontà di Teodorico come propria sepoltura ed i vari rilevamenti storici datano questo mausoleo attorno al 520 d.C..

The mausoleum, as described above, was built in two levels, the first, the lower one, is supposed to be intended as a tomb for the members of Theodoric's family, while the second level, the higher one, is the place where Theodoric's body was probably placed.
According to some historical reconstructions, Theodoric's remains were removed and dispersed around 560 AD, during the Byzantine rule, when the mausoleum was converted into an oratory for Orthodox worship.

Il mausoleo, come descritto prima, è stato costruito in due livelli, il primo, quello più in basso, si suppone che fosse destinato a tomba per i membri della famiglia di Teodorico, mentre il secondo livello, quello più in alto, è il luogo in cui fu probabilmente posta la salma di Teodorico.
Secondo alcune ricostruzioni storiche le spoglie di Teodorico furono rimosse e disperse intorno al 560 d.C., durante il dominio bizantino, quando il mausoleo fu convertito in un oratorio per il culto ortodosso.
