Photos and Thoughts: Ducati Hypermotard 796
Subject of the Photo
While I was walking, I found this bike parked, a Ducati Hypermotard 796.
Thoughts
Production of the 796
The history of Ducati's Hypermotard began in 2005, when Ducati presented the Hypermotard prototype at the EICMA show in Milan, Italy. The production 1100 version arrived in 2007, while the more accessible Hypermotard 796 was introduced in October 2009 as a 2010 model.
**The 796 therefore belongs to the first generation of Ducati Hypermotards and remained on the market until the arrival of the new generation, which, if I'm not mistaken, arrived in 2013.
The Designer
The key figure behind the creation of the Hypermotard is South African designer Pierre Terblanche, one of the most important designers in Ducati's modern history.
What he wanted to do was take the concept of the lightweight and aggressive supermotard and reinterpret it according to Ducati's philosophy, creating a design blending supermotard, naked, and road sports bike.
The Birth of the Motorcycle
When Ducati presented the prototype in 2005, it wasn't yet certain whether it would go into production, so Ducati organized a survey on its website, and approximately 15,000 people participated. More than half essentially asked Ducati to produce it as it had been presented. The Bologna-based manufacturer also listened to several suggestions from enthusiasts in developing the final version. Perhaps it is one of those rare cases in which public enthusiasm actually contributed to the decision to produce a concept bike.
Why the 796 Was Born
When Ducati decided to expand the family with a less demanding bike, the 796 was born, with an 803cc air-cooled Desmodue twin-cylinder engine, approximately 81 hp, 75.5 Nm of torque, and a claimed weight of approximately 167 kg.
It was therefore less powerful than the previous bike, but also very light and designed to maintain the extremely agile nature of the Hypermotard.
Historical Importance
The Hypermotard project was of considerable importance for Ducati. The company itself describes the model as the origin of a new "cross-over" category, capable of combining characteristics from different motorcycle types.
I would say that the Hypermotard helped transform the idea of the supermotard into something more usable on a daily basis without sacrificing a deliberately aggressive and fun setting.
Competitions
Here we have an interesting story. The 796 in the photographs wasn't originally designed as a rally bike, and it didn't have a racing career comparable to Ducati's competition bikes. The Hypermotard family, however, has an important sporting history: in 2008, a Hypermotard 1100 S won its class at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the famous American time trial in Colorado.
Conclusions
I could almost say I photographed a truly important motorcycle because it represents a particular phase in Ducati's history. The Hypermotard 796 still retains its air-cooled Desmodue twin-cylinder engine, trellis frame, and single-sided swingarm, elements that today give it a decidedly "analog" character.
This Hypermotard won Best of Show at the 2005 EICMA and subsequently the Motorcycle Design Trophy for best motorcycle design of 2005.
Question
Have you ever seen this bike speeding down the street? Do you like it?
