What are modal verbs? This is definitely one of the first questions everyone asks when they start learning English.
We can say that modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that do not describe an action, but modify the meaning of the main verb. Modal verbs express ability, possibility, permission, obligation, advice, or probability.

The Structure of Modal Verbs
Below I show the structure of modal verbs.

**Subject + modal verb + infinitive verb without "to".

List of Modal Verbs
Below is a list of modal verbs that come to mind:

-Could

-Will
NOTE: After a modal verb, the infinitive verb without "to" is always used.

The Main Meaning of Some Modal Verbs
Perhaps the most commonly used modal verb is Can. The primary meaning is to know how to do, to be able to do, or to be allowed.
Not to be confused with the meaning of Could, which means "knew how to do," a polite request, or a suggestion.
Be able to, on the other hand, has a clear meaning; this modal verb means "to be capable of."
Another modal verb you've certainly heard is must. This modal verb means "must," or "almost certain deduction."
Then we can mention may, which means "possibility."
Finally, last but not least because it's so commonly used, we have Will, which is the modal verb of the certain future.

Cosa sono i verbi modali? Questa è assolutamente una delle prima domande che ognuno si fa quando si inizia a studiare la lingua inglese.
Possiamo dire che i verbi modali sono verbi ausiliari che non descrivono un'azione, ma modificano il significato del verbo principale. I verbi modali esprimono capacità, possibilità, permesso, obbligo, consiglio o probabilità.

La struttura dei verbi modali
Qui di seguito mostro la struttura dei verbi modali.

**soggetto + verbo modale + verbo all'infinito senza "to".

Elenco dei verbi modali
Qui di seguito un elenco dei verbi modali che ora mi vengono in mente:

NOTA: Dopo un modal verb si usa sempre il verbo all'infinito senza "to".

Il significato principale di alcuni verbi modali
Forse il verbo modale più usato è Can. Il significato principale è sapere fare, potere o permesso.
Da non confondere con il significato di Could, che significa sapeva fare, richiesta educata e suggerimento.
Invece Be able to ha un significato chiaro, questo verbo modale significa "essere capace di".
Un altro verbo modale che avrete certamente sentito è must. Questo verbo modale significa "dovere", oppure "deduzione quasi certa".
Poi possiamo citare may che significa "possibilità".
Infine, per ultimo, ma non ultimo in quanto usatissimo, abbiamo Will, che sarebbe il verbo modale del futuro certo.

Conclusioni
Uno degli strumenti più importanti della grammatica inglese sono proprio i verbi modali, essi permettono di esprimere un'azione ed il modo in cui essa viene interpretata. Grazie a verbi come can, could, may, might, must, should, will e would, è possibile comunicare capacità, possibilità, permesso, obbligo, consiglio, intenzione e probabilità con precisione ed efficacia.

I verbi modali hanno una storia molto antica e sono tra gli elementi più antichi della lingua inglese.
