08-10-2026 - Let's discuss - fuel prices [EN]-[IT]
With this column, I'd like to spark a discussion on the topic at hand.

Argument
Today in Italy, gasoline costs €2.03, while diesel costs €2.26.
Exactly one year ago, that is, in October 2026, a piadina cost €1.71 while diesel cost €1.64. Practically speaking, today, compared to a year ago, gasoline costs 18% more, while diesel costs 37%.
What's immediately striking is that the percentage increase in diesel is practically double that of gasoline. If we were to analyze this increase on an annual basis, we'd be in for a pleasant surprise.
A driver who consumes 1,000 liters of diesel per year would, at these prices, spend almost €620 more on fuel per year compared to October 2025.
The increase in fuel prices in Italy is explained by the following factors:
-oil price
-refined products market
-euro/dollar exchange rate
-the impact on the supply chain, the conflict with Iran.

This conflict has pushed the price of Brent above $100 a barrel, reduced oil traffic, and created diesel shortages.
We can safely say that the war with Iran and the traffic disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz are a key cause of the increase in fuel prices in 2026, particularly for diesel.
I tried to do some research and see what happened in Germany and the United States regarding the increase in fuel prices. If we look back to October 2025, we see the following.
From 2025 to 2026, gasoline in Germany increased from €1.672/l to €2.126/l, and diesel from €1.589/l to €2.233/l.
Gasoline in the United States increased from $3.124/gal to $4.354/gal from 2025 to 2026, and diesel from $3.711/gal to $6.199/gal.
The surprising fact is that diesel fuel in the United States increased by 67% in one year.
This data tells us that the increase in fuel prices is absolutely not an Italian problem, but an international problem that affects everyone.
In China, again compared to a year ago, gasoline increased by 21% and diesel by 23%. So even China was not spared from the Hormuz crisis, but the data shows lower price increases, especially for diesel, compared to Italy, Germany, and the United States.

Conclusions:
The comparison between October 2025 and October 2026 highlights a sharp increase in gasoline prices and, especially, diesel fuel in many countries around the world. The increases recorded in Italy, Germany, the United States, and China demonstrate that fuel price increases are not exclusively an Italian phenomenon, but have an international dimension.

Question:
And what do you think about this topic? What is the fuel situation in your country? Are you having trouble with the increase in fuel prices that has occurred over the past year? If you go on those blue lines, go faster, and, okay, blue lines, I'm playing this game?

ITALIAN
08-10-2026 - Ragioniamo su …- il prezzo del carburante [EN]-[IT]

THE END

That jump in diesel prices in the US is wild. Here in my corner things are getting pretty painful at the pump too since the logistics costs just trickle down to everything else we buy.

Hi, thanks for your comment. The situation here in Italy isn’t great, but I’ve noticed that things seem even worse in the US. It’s safe to say that the latest data confirms the rise in fuel prices in 2026 is not an exclusively Italian phenomenon, but rather an international energy crisis linked primarily to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. !WINE

Trump blamed Ukraine for the rise in diesel fuel prices because Ukraine is blowing up Russian refineries.
Russia is currently facing a severe gasoline shortage. It is forbidden to sell fuel in canisters. Putin has banned the export of diesel fuel.
The world has gone mad… Old, crazy presidents.

Rising fuel prices also have a knock-on effect on many other sectors. In Italy, Germany, and the United States, for instance, the price of diesel has risen significantly more than that of gasoline—a clear sign that supply and refining challenges are hitting diesel particularly hard. In China, too, the price of gasoline has increased by approximately 21.7% compared to a year ago. In short, a great many nations are currently grappling with rising fuel costs.

This is a stark breakdown of how geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz hit global energy markets. The 37% jump in diesel is hitting everyday commuters and logistics sectors extremely hard, since freight transport relies almost entirely on diesel. It’s a similar story across many parts of the world right now—consumers are caught between sticky inflation and rising global pump prices. Navigating these costs forces many of us to cut back on discretionary travel or adjust monthly budgets just to absorb the hit.

I am among those who have started traveling less due to the rise in fuel prices. The crisis in the Strait of Hormuz remains a key factor; tensions in that area have continued to restrict global oil traffic. Furthermore, some analyses indicate that the price of Brent crude has climbed above $110 per barrel, which has a particularly severe impact on the diesel market.

I did not realize that fuel prices have increased so much in many countries. 😥 It is surprising to see that diesel prices increased more than gasoline prices in Italy, Germany, and the United States. Here in the Philippines, we also feel the effects of fuel price increases. When fuel becomes more expensive, the prices of food, transportation, and other daily necessities often go up as well. Many people depend on public transportation, so higher fuel prices can affect their daily budget. As someone who tries to manage expenses carefully, I understand how difficult it can be when prices continue to rise. 😩 The increase in fuel costs can also affect farmers, delivery services, and small businesses. It is interesting to learn that this is not only happening in one country but in many parts of the world. Your research shows how global events can impact ordinary people everywhere. I hope fuel prices will become more stable in the future because many families are already struggling with the cost of living. 🙏

Thank you for presenting the data in a clear way. It was informative and helped me better understand the situation. Have a great weekend and thanks for sharing your thoughts on this important topic! 🤝😊

Thanks for leaving a comment. The data for Italy is essentially confirmed: average prices recorded in October 2026 are around €2.02/l for gasoline and €2.24–€2.26/l for diesel, confirming a significant price gap between the two fuels. This is the situation in Italy, but the impact of rising fuel prices is widespread. While some nations might be less affected by these hikes, it seems to me that almost every part of the world is suffering from the increase in fuel costs.
