Self Autonomy Is Still The Greatest
What a funny topic it is, I've been laughing ever since seeing this prompt.
Looking at this grossly, I'm like, yes, is it not my body? Why can't I say what I want to do with my body when eventually taking care of the body lies in my hand.
Organ trafficking on the other hand is a very strong ethical consideration in medical field in general and something a lot of countries frown at because of the repercussions that comes with it.
But before we proceed, let's get one fact straight..... Giving consent to something as important as losing your organ isn't one that should be made when people don't have options.
What do I mean?
80 percent if not more than that of people that donates their organ do so because they don't have money... They are poor and eventually wants to take an easy route which for them is donating their organ.
So is decision made under the pressure of hunger, debt, or homelessness and not from a position of freedom really counts as consenting to one harvesting their organs?
I really don't think so.
Ironically, most of the persons who accept this offer of organ donation to solve immediate poverty ends up getting poorer than they were and it's expected, do you know why?
Since it's not legal, most of the persons undergoing the surgery perform that under poor hospital conditions and some of the people doing the harvesting aren't as skilled as they should be and ends up complicating the lives of these individuals to the extent that whatever they sold the organs for might not be able to take care of the complications that arises from the surgery.
Furthermore, come to think of this, I know it's your body and you own autonomy for it, however, legalising this will create a social class like we've never experienced before.
The body of the poor will automatically be turned into resources for the rich which I don't think it's a position any of us wants to find themselves in.
Going back to the question of the prompt, shouldn't they have a right to decide what to do with it or sell pieces of it? What are your thoughts on this?
Personally, I think anyone should have the right to do whatever pleases him or her.
It's kind of double standard to say someone can willingly donate his or her kidney for a philanthropic gesture but can't do so to solve their poverty problems, however, some things needs to be in place before we even look at these offers...
The masses needs to be equipped with the right knowledge regarding the organ they want to sell or donate stating clearly the repercussions of doing so.
Also, a rule must be made that it must be done by the most skilled person in that field to limit the complications that comes following the surgery.
In summary, I for one, think self autonomy is still the greatest ethical consideration in life generally and you should be allowed to do what you want to do, however, adequate information must be provided before embarking on that journey.
Thanks for reading and have a nice day ahead 👍
