Rethinking Homework: Balance Over Abolition
Good morning and welcome to my blog
The main role of homework, I think is to subconsciously make the child know that learning does not end in the school premises. It specifically makes children to be ready to practice the act of reading anywhere they find themselves including their homes.
Most times, you get to understand things clearer even more than you understood from your teacher's class when someone else explained it to you which might be during your search for who will help you do the homeworks you were given.
This has been a tradition that has been working for long because If I can remember, from the early days of my nursery school, when all I did was to bring back the homework waiting for my mum to tell me where to write "A" or "B" and I will follow her lead. From those early days up until now, even as a practicing medical doctor, I still find myself doing homeworks.
They say "Change is constant" and I agree. But do we really need to change something if It has been working perfectly fine for us? Changing this long standing tradition in my view will not be so beneficial to us.
It literally means that anything you do not learn in school from your teacher automatically becomes a hazy area for you to understand. This is because most times when we solve these assignments, we get to understand better approaches and solidifies our knowledge on it better.
Also, most times, it is very difficult especially in the early days of our schooling (the primary and nursery classes), for us to just pick up books and read at home unless we have an assignment to do.
Eradicating giving homeworks will make children only open their books during class hours alone which will invariably affect their academic performance in the long run.
- Balancing The Odds
An assignment is more impactful if it is what you can do within, say two hours at max. This is to enable you have life even asides school. Factoring in the time the child should play, do house chores, play games and watch movies with the load of assignments you are giving will be very important because the aim of extra learning is defeated already when the child is doing the homework whereas his mind is at the football pitch he is missing out on.
It also allows the child to explore his other hobbies especially non-academic related which we can't argue is important in the general well-being of the child.
In summary, rather than sticking too much to tradition, I think what should be more important is finding an fertile ground where the academic system will favour our children the more and give them the necessary support system they may need to thrive and I do not think removing homeworks entirely is that approach.
Thanks for reading and have a nice day 👍

You just said it correctly, no need of changing a thing if it's working the only thing we can do is to improve on it. Homework is a necessary thing because it helps the children to know more and understand what they don't in the class
That's very true
