Apis mellifera on pomegranate (Punica granatum) (ENG - SPN)

Good morning, afternoon, or evening. If you're familiar with my blog, you may know that I keep stingless bees. I won't say I raise them, because I really don't. I basically make sure they have food year-round, and also water in the summer. Although I've tried (not too insistently) to have them build hives or nests in certain areas, I really let them choose for themselves. That's how I've had hives at my front door, in my backyard, and in the garden. However, I also welcome and care for other species of pollinators, such as bumblebees and stinging bees, Apis mellifera, and I want to share some photos of them today.

Buenos días, tardes o noches. Si están familiarizados con mi blog, quizás sepan que cuido abejas sin aguijón. No voy a decir que las crío, porque realmente no es así, ya que fundamentalmente me aseguro que tengan comida durante todo el año, y también agua en el verano. Aunque he tratado (sin mucha insistencia), que hagan colmenas o nidos en ciertas partes, realmente las dejo que ellas mismas elijan. De eso modo, he tenido colmenas en la puerta de mi casa, en mi jardín interno, y en el solar. Sin embargo, también doy la bienvenida y cuido a otras especies de polinizadores, como son los abejorros y las abejas con aguijón, es decir, Apis mellifera, y de ellas hoy quiero compartir unas fotos.

I believe that any animal, as long as it isn't stressed or feels threatened, won't be interested in attacking. I say this because sometimes people see a wasp or a bee with a stinger, and they get shocked and swat at it to scare it away. This can lead to a situation in which the insect attacks you, stings you, with the unfortunate result that the poor insect dies and the person sustains one or more stings. Therefore, when you see bees and are afraid they might sting you, it's best to walk away and leave them alone.

Creo que todo animal, siempre y cuando no sea sometido a estrés, o se sienta amenazado, no tendrá el interés en atacar. Esto lo digo porque a veces las personas ven alguna avispa o a alguna abeja con aguijón, y se escandalizan, dan manotazos para espantarlas, pudiendo generar en una situación en la cual el insecto te agreda, te pique, con el lamentable resultado de que el pobre insecto muere y la persona tiene uno o varios piquetes. Por eso, cuando veas abejas y sientas temor de que te puedan picar, mejor aléjate y déjalas quietas.

When I took these photos, I was checking on my pomegranate plant (Punica granatum), because thanks to the care I gave it and the seasonal rains, it had revived and is now blooming and bearing abundant fruit. Months ago, I thought this plant would die, but fortunately, it survived and is recovering. This makes me very happy because there is a variety of melipona bees that prefer pomegranate flowers, and I'm referring to those known as "pegones," whose scientific name is Trigona spinipes. This particular species of melipona doesn't produce edible honey because it typically uses manure to build its nests, which means its product is unfit for human consumption. Here I share a (somewhat blurry) photo of these little bees. I really like watching them because the delight and pleasure they feel when sipping these flowers is evident. On certain occasions it is possible to observe up to 5 individuals in the same flower, giving the impression that they are playing, having fun in them.

Cuando tomé estas fotos yo estaba revisando mi planta de granada (Punica granatum), porque ví que gracias a los cuidados que le dí y a las lluvias de la temporada, revivió y está floreciendo y dando muchos frutos. Meses atrás pensé que esta planta moriría, pero afortunadamente pudo sobrevivir y se está recuperando. Esto me alegra mucho, porque hay una variedad de abejas meliponas que prefieren las flores de granada, y me refiero a las conocidas como “pegones” cuyo nombre científico es Trigona spinipes. Esta especie en particular de meliponas, no produce una miel que sea comestible, porque por lo general usa estiércol para hacer sus nidos, lo que implica que su producto no sea apto para el consumo humano. Aquí les comparto una foto (algo borrosa) de esas pequeñas abejas. A mí me gusta mucho observarlas, porque es evidente el deleite, el placer que ellas sienten al libar estas flores. En ciertas ocasiones es posible observar hasta 5 individuos en una misma flor, da la impresión de que están jugando, divirtiéndose en ellas.

I continued watching and saw a stinging bee, Apis mellifera, sipping on another pomegranate flower. I saw it there, so engaged and focused, that I wanted to take several photos, as long as it wanted, of course. As you can see, it never attacked me; it continued collecting nectar and pollen, while letting me take the photos. It was a beautiful moment.

Seguí observando, y ví una abeja con aguijón, Apis mellifera, libando otra flor de granada. La ví allí, tan entretenida y concentrada, que quise tomarle varias fotos mientras ella quisiera, claro. Como pueden ver, ella en ningún momento me agredió, siguió en su labor de recolecta de néctar y polen, mientras me dejaba tomarle las fotos. Fue un momento hermoso.

I know that large numbers of these bees can be deadly. In fact, right across from my house, many years ago, perhaps 40 years ago, a swarm of African honeybees (Apis mellifera scutellata) killed a man who was passing by on the street, and he didn't have time to take shelter. That day, they demolished a house about 20 meters from my home, and one of the walls contained a huge hive of these insects. Those demolishing the structure failed to take the proper precautions and measures, resulting in a fatal outcome. With good management, this wouldn't have happened.

Sé que grandes cantidades de estas abejas pueden ser mortales, de hecho, diagonal a mi casa, muchos años atrás, quizás 40 años, un enjambre de abejas africanas (Apis mellifera scutellata) mató a un señor que iba transitando por la calle, y a quien no le dio tiempo de refugiarse. Ese día, demolieron una casa a unos 20 metros de mi hogar, y en una de esas paredes, habitaba una enorme colmena de estos insectos, y quienes demolían la estructura, no tomaron las previsiones y medidas adecuadas, con el fatal resultado. Con un buen manejo, esto no habría ocurrido.
