Animals eating guava (ENG - SPN)

I have a beautiful guava tree on my property. It sprouted after a little bird brought a seed and dropped it in the soil, where the tree then grew. That was perhaps eight or ten years ago; the fact is, it is now a large, productive tree that yields plenty of flowers and fruit—produce enjoyed not only by us humans but also by the animals that inhabit this lovely space. It is a yellow guava variety, which is somewhat rare in Venezuela, where the pink or red varieties abound. This particular variety is notable for being highly fragrant and having a very potent, almost citrusy flavor that is strongly reminiscent of pineapple.

One of the tree's branches hangs right over the door leading to the lot, making it easy to observe the fruit and flowers. Recently, there have been many green or emerald beetles (Macraspis chrysis)—more than usual, I’d say. I used to see the occasional one in the inner or outer courtyard, but lately I’ve seen so many that it caught my attention; upon observing this branch, I understood why there are so many of these insects on my property: I saw them eating ripe guavas. I must say, it was the first time I had ever witnessed this feeding behavior, and it really surprised me.

I have posted about this insect several times in the past, as I find it so beautiful and unique that I believe it deserves to be known; the truth is, I was surprised to see so many of them together, feeding quite undisturbed on guava fruit. It is reassuring to know that they pose no threat to my plants, as they do not damage the roots; quite the opposite, they benefit soil health because their larvae create tunnels. They also aid in the breakdown of decaying wood—such as fallen logs and branches—making them a saproxylophagous species. The adult insects play a role as pollinators.

Just as with the emerald beetles (Macraspis chrysis), I’ve spotted other insects I hadn't seen before: small, yellowish flies with transparent wings known as mango fruit flies (Anastrepha obliqua). These, however, are a genuine pest. They may have been affecting my guava tree for some time without me noticing, which would explain why many fruits ripen prematurely or turn mushy inside. I’ve already consulted AI on how to make a homemade trap to control their population. The photos show several specimens that appear to be feeding, though I suspect they are also laying eggs, as it is the larvae that damage the fruit. Since this is a highly aggressive pest, I plan to set up several traps to bring their numbers down.

And finally, I’d like to share a photo of a small land tortoise—or morrocoy—enjoying a ripe guava that had fallen to the ground. Everyone loves guavas, and fortunately, there is fruit for everyone.

This concludes my post for today, in which I’ve shared images of some animals that inhabit my plot of land and feed on the guavas. I say goodbye to you, wishing you good health and well-being and remember: Not all days are the same, and even more important: Everything you give, everything you do, will inexorably return to you. Hugs!

¡Abrazos!

Hello my dear, lovely to see your post here! The green beetle is harmless for me, I have had larvae in my container plants. The one I do not like is the black bug because it clearly attacks the roots of the plants. When it comes to fruits, they always find a way to have their food source and guava is literally sweet when they are ripe so the bees are also attracted to them.
