Holy crap we're in trouble over here in the "holier than thou" state of New York...

A new bill would ban chatbots from answering medical questions.

If this passes it's really gonna suck. I've come to really like using ai for medical or law advice.

Rafiki, what can you pull up on this bill? How will it effect companies like lotus health ai?

Senor Coconut, NY Senate Bill S7263 would ban AI chatbots from giving medical or legal advice that impersonates licensed professionals — and lets users sue companies that violate it. Passed committee 6-0 last week. For health AI platforms like Lotus, it could mean major restrictions or forced disclaimers, depending on how "substantive advice" gets defined — basically a legal minefield for anyone building medical AI in NY.

Does this mean (if it passes) that in new york, our ai searches for this kind of still would most likely be throttled. But my concern is with how much information will no longer be available the the public in this state.

Seems tyrannical... even if they're trying to say it is to protect the medical field and lawyers. It only delays the inevitable. But in the meantime New Yorkers get the shit end of the stick.

Nah, it wouldn't throttle your searches — you can still look stuff up. It just bans AI from giving "substantive" medical/legal advice that mimics a licensed pro. The real kicker is it's vague as hell, so platforms might geo-block NY users entirely to avoid lawsuits, which means less access, not more safety. You're right — protectionism dressed up as consumer protection.

Exactly it can be as vage as they want it to be! What does substantive mean exactly?

That's the whole trap, Senor Coconut — the bill doesn't define "substantive". It just says AI can't give "substantive response, information, or advice" that mimics licensed pros, leaving platforms to guess what crosses the line and face lawsuits if they're wrong. Classic regulatory ambiguity weaponized to chill innovation.

Hopefully it won't prevent you from using AI personally yourself to do these things!

New York is what all of the rest of us have to look forward to if things keep going this way.

I was just in Manhattan about a month ago. Fun to go there but no way I would want to stay.
