Hello Everyone! Hope you all are doing great.
I want this post to be good so I decided to give my review on a classic book that I read recently. I am sure you all have heard of it. It is The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.
Some books do not try to entertain or comfort you. The Metamorphosis is one of those books. It is short, strange, unsettling in a quiet way. I picked it up. I knew it was a classic. It felt heavy, despite being small.
After finishing it the feeling that stayed with me was not shock or excitement, it was discomfort.
Thatโs why Iโd describe The Metamorphosis as brilliant, but also deeply depressing.
Kafka's writing style is simple on the surface also the language is not complicated, the story does not rely on descriptions. But that simplicity misleads. There is much happening beneath the surface. You almost feel uneasy. It happens while reading. Nothing dramatic is happening.
So what I noticed first was how calm the book feels even when it talks about something really disturbing Kafka does not exaggerate the events. He presents them plainly. It seems as if what is happening is normal. That calm tone makes everything more uncomfortable. You keep waiting for the story to react.
So the atmosphere is cold and isolating and, you feel trapped inside that tension as a reader. The loneliness stays. It is not just being alone in a room. It is deeper. It sits in the chest. It does not leave. The mind feels empty. The heart feels heavy. There is no one to share the weight. People appear to be present but do not engage with one another.
The book deals with identity, asking what happens when your role in society changes or when you're no longer useful. Love disappears after convenience ends.

So the characters seem distant at times, but that is on purpose and no one behaves like a hero. Nobody steps in to save the day. You see human reactions. Avoidance. Denial. Resentment. Emotional exhaustion. You feel uncomfortable because it feels real.
So this book just sits there not explaining much so you're left figuring things out on your own like Kafka didn't really bother to spell it out for you and you slowly realise the meaning. It hits after you finish reading. You might find yourself thinking about it. Days later you replay moments in your head.
So this is not easy to read and there is no warmth or relief but things look quiet. A weight sits on every page. It is the kind of story that drains you. You did not notice it while reading, but by the end, you felt it.
So I gotta say I really like this book because itโs honest in a way thatโs pretty direct. It doesnโt sugarcoat anything. It shows how conditional empathy can be. People quickly distance theMslves from discomfort. Society treats people differently when they do not fit expected roles. This shows in how they act. It is clear in daily life. The way others respond matters. People notice who stands out. Rules exist for a reason. Some follow them. Others do not. The difference gets seen. Judgments happen. behaviour changes. Expectations shape reactions. Not everyone meets them. That is a fact.
But enjoyment and admiration arenโt always the same thing so I respected The Metamorphosis more than I enjoyed it. It'sn't a book I would recommend easily. Someone looking for a fun read. Or a relaxing one. It is mentally heavy, as well as emotionally Drining in a quiet way.
It is worth reading.
Kafka says a lot in a short time and the book carries meaning despite its length, you know. Every scene feels purposeful. Nothing will be wasted. That's one of the reasons it's so brilliant.

This kind of book depends a lot on your mindset and if you read it at the right time in your life it can hit hard. Some people will relate to its themes. They feel isolation. They feel pressure. More than others. Some might feel disturbed without knowing why.
For me, The Metamorphosis felt like a mirror I didn't really want to look into, it reflects uncomfortable truths about family, responsibility, and, worth. Thatโs not pleasant, but itโs powerful.
So The Metamorphosis isnโt something youโd call fun like a good book should be it doesnโt make you feel all warm inside. It does not lift. But it is honest, sharp, & unforgettable.
It is brilliant, yes, but it is also deeply depressing.
Well, I guess this is it for this post. Please do give your reviews in the comments section below. I would really appreciate it :)
