State Republican Parties Are Going Rogue

Nebraska holds its primary election tomorrow. While all five Republicans in the state’s delegation — two senators and three House members — are on the ballot, the state party is endorsing none of them.
It’s the latest state Republican party in which far-right activists are taking control and attempting to root out traditional or centrist Republicans in order to nominate more like-minded candidates, regardless of their electoral chances in a general election…
State parties were once extensions of the national party, working together toward a common goal of electing the strongest Republican candidates. But that has changed in the era of Trump and the GOP’s painful identity crisis. Elements of the right are now more interested in far-right purity than electability.

An Unusually Aggressive Grand Jury in Arizona

The Arizona grand jury that recently indicted 18 people for their roles in former President Donald Trump’s scheme to subvert the 2020 election cast a far wider net than state prosecutors had publicly foreshadowed.
The panel of 16 Arizonans displayed unusual independence from the prosecutors supervising the investigation.
The grand jury took aggressive steps to haul in witnesses and even brought charges against some who had been told by prosecutors they were not under investigation.

When Trump Attacks Our Elections, We Will Have No Excuse

Donald Trump and his Republican allies have no intention of accepting the outcome of a free and fair election.

Tragedy and Folly

…a dimension of what’s happening right now in Israel that is mostly off the radar in the U.S. The piece is about a reported blow up between Netanyahu and IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi. Specifically, it has the latter telling Netanyahu that because he refuses to make diplomatic arrangements for the post-war government of Gaza, the IDF is having to go back to fight again in areas it already took over.

Vladimir Putin set to transfer Sergei Shoigu from Russian defence ministry

Mr Shoigu's suggested replacement, Mr Belousov, is an economist with little military experience and will come as a surprise to some.
But in the view of other analysts, the move indicates that President Putin is seeking to align the Russian economy more closely with the war effort…
He was reportedly the only member of the president's economic entourage to support the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Schools Brace for Widespread Teacher Layoffs

Schools across the country are announcing teacher and staff layoffs as districts brace for the end of a pandemic aid package that delivered the largest one-time federal investment in K-12 education. The funds must be used by the end of September, creating a sharp funding cliff as schools also struggle with widespread enrollment declines and inflation.

National Dem strategy worries state abortion-rights leaders

Local organizers and national advocates fear Democratic candidates, in promoting abortion-rights referendums that may boost their electoral prospects, could inadvertently doom the initiatives.
It’s a particular concern in key presidential and Senate battlegrounds like Arizona, Montana and Nevada where ballot measure campaigns to codify abortion rights need more than just Democratic voters to succeed.
