Tracing the Mist at the Peak: A Short Story from Batu Susun Tourism

That overcast morning turned out to be a serene journey for my wife and me. From the moment we left the house, the sky had been shrouded in a blanket of gray clouds. There was no strong sunlight, only a thin mist that accompanied the entire road. However, this atmosphere actually made our hearts feel more peaceful. Our destination that morning was a tourist spot on a mountaintop, still on the same route as Pantan Terong. The place is called Batu Susun Diatas Awan (Stacked Stones Above the Clouds).

The road there was fairly smooth, although caution was required due to the steep inclines and sudden sharp turns. The natural landscape along the way seemed to be deliberately showcasing its beauty. Green gardens, dense forests, and the occasional small villager's house added color to our journey. Mustard greens and potatoes grew abundantly in this highland. It was as if the soil of the Takengon mountains held abundant fertility for anyone willing to nurture it.

Upon arriving at the Batu Susun tourist spot, we immediately saw a large sign that read "Batu Susun Diatas Awan Pantan Terong Tourism." From a distance, the cluster of hills appeared verdant with mist hanging over their peaks. Large boulders called "Batu Susun" (stacked stones) appear tiered on the hill, as if neatly arranged by human hands. However, most of them are unique natural formations and are a major attraction of this tourist attraction.

To reach the boulders, visitors must climb a pre-prepared path. There are simple steps made of earth and stone. The path climbs steadily to the top of the hill. Unfortunately, I wasn't up to the challenge that morning. The cold air and my body not being fully prepared forced me to give up. My wife also chose to just walk around and enjoy the surrounding area from below. Although we didn't reach the highest peak, we were still satisfied with the beautiful views.

Beside this tourist area are several buildings, such as a small information office, a café, a villa, and a mosque. These buildings combine wood and concrete, blending seamlessly with nature. Their shapes and colors are simple, yet still beautiful to look at. I imagine the atmosphere here at night must be even more serene, when the gentle mountain breeze blows and the clear sky displays the stars.

As I slowly walked down the hill, I saw vast expanses of grass and local gardens nestled in the valley. The view was like a pristine green carpet. Small houses in the distance gave the impression of a tranquil highland lifestyle. Dense forests surrounded the back of the hill, as if protecting the area from the noise of the modern world, as if protecting it from the hustle and bustle of the modern world.

Every gust of wind carried the scent of wet leaves and fresh earth. Clouds moved slowly overhead, occasionally obscuring parts of the mountain peaks. There were moments when the fog descended quite low, making the scenery seem to change in an instant. Hills that had previously been clearly visible suddenly seemed to disappear into the white mist. This mysterious atmosphere actually made our hearts feel even more at ease.

As we walked, we took several photos for memories: the tourist sign, the rising green hills, and even the view from the valley. Everything looked beautiful, despite the cloudy weather. The gray sky didn't obscure the beauty of the surrounding nature. The clouds hung like a giant curtain, adding drama to the morning scenery.

I also noticed the main road that passed right in front of this tourist spot. The road looked clean and easy to navigate, making it a suitable family destination. Moreover, it's close to Pantan Terong, already well-known as a spot for panoramic views of Takengon city from a height. Two attractions in one make for a delightful trip.

A large building with a blue roof stood out from a distance. I assumed it was a cafe or rest area for visitors. Its slightly elevated location made it perfect for relaxing while enjoying the misty mountain views. I imagined the pleasure of sipping warm Gayo coffee there, accompanied by the cool air embracing my body. It would certainly be an unforgettable experience.

The silence of this area also provided space to listen to the sounds of nature. Birdsong, leaves rustling in the wind, and the faint sounds of everyday life far below. Everything felt harmonious, like a song created directly by nature.

Even though I didn't manage to set foot on the summit of the stacked rocks, this short trip was still a valuable experience. A lingering curiosity compels me to return someday. I want to see the view from the top of the hill, to experience standing among the iconic boulders of this place. I'm sure the beauty I haven't yet witnessed up close is still waiting to be explored.

The Stacked Rocks Above the Clouds offer an opportunity for anyone seeking peace amidst nature. This place is perfect for escaping the stresses of everyday life. Some say the mountain air can heal a weary heart and mind, and I felt that way. Although short, this trip was like natural therapy for the soul.

Before we headed home, I looked back up at the hill. The mist that had cleared earlier was now descending, as if saying goodbye. I smiled. There was a part of me left at the summit, a small part that promised to return.

The journey home felt warmer, even though the weather was still chilly. The same path now offered a different perspective. The plants that had only been glimpsed before now seemed to greet us. What initially seemed like an ordinary, cloudy morning turned into a memorable journey that brought simple joy.

If you're in Takengon or planning a visit to the Gayo highlands, I highly recommend visiting Batu Susun Diatas Awan (The Stacked Stones Above the Clouds). This tourist attraction is still developing, but its natural beauty is ready to delight anyone who visits. There's no need to climb to the summit if you're not up to it. Just enjoying the scenery from below is enough to soothe your heart.

This kind of journey reminds me that happiness doesn't always come in large forms. Sometimes it comes in the form of a light mist, cool air, a steep path, and quality time with loved ones. That's the best reward from that cloudy morning on a mountaintop.
