Houses and Roads Destroyed by Flash Floods and Landslides in Bener Meriah

Hello photography friends, I'd like to share some photos I took at three locations after a natural disaster.

I took these photos last week while surveying several isolated areas. I also traveled to several locations to visit families affected by flash floods and landslides.

As you can see in these images, almost three weeks after the natural disaster struck our area, several roads are still covered in landslide debris. We can see fallen trees, large logs scattered across the road, and mud blocking access roads.

In several locations, for example, when I was heading to the Teritit and Simpang Tiga intersections in Bener Meriah Regency, landslide debris still covered the national highway. The brown and brick-red clay covered the road and even destroyed houses.

Numerous logs and rocks were also scattered in residents' yards, and several public facilities, such as power poles, had fallen. Electrical workers have been working extra hard to restore power, ensuring residents no longer have to sleep in the dark at night.

The flash floods in our area were quite severe, flowing rapidly and destroying everything in their path. The brown water, mixed with mud, pushed rocks and trees into residential areas and carried them.

In fact, what was once a 2-meter-wide irrigation canal has now widened to 10 meters, dividing every plot of land on its side. Meanwhile, several houses near the watercourse have been swept away.

Some houses remain, but parts of the houses are no longer intact; the impact of the floodwaters has destroyed them at the corners of the walls. Meanwhile, whatever was inside has been swept away, leaving no trace.

While I was at this location, I felt deeply saddened, seeing the homes and possessions that had been lost. I also saw several coffee plantations along the road that had collapsed. Their plantations were flattened, their coffee and chili plants gone, leaving only the landslide scars.

In one spot, the soil even shifted, covering the plantations below. The impact of the floods and landslides in my area is indeed severe, as we are located in a mountainous area, especially since the soil texture in the area is loose, which is why we often see landslides on many hillsides.

The water flow also eroded every gap, even cutting off and dividing the road, making it impassable. Currently, several work trucks and heavy equipment have been deployed to the flood-affected area to clear the remaining landslide material blocking the road.
