Equality in the West, or at least in the U.S., has traditionally referred to equality of opportunity based on merit not equality of outcome.

Meritocracy offers a useful model, but it's also important to consider how structural factors might skew opportunities. Balancing both true competition and fair access is key to sustainable progress

There's only so much balancing you can do without simply creating more unfairness. At least until and unless we reach a point where economics is no longer ruled by scarcity.
