On Yer Bike - My Bike Maintenance and Upgrades

avatar

Hello Cycling Community,

This is my first post in the community and was made aware of it by @friendlymoose on Ecency Waves. I only just saw that I should do a MYBIKE post as an intro post and will try to include that a little in my post today.

I did have plans to maybe get a new bike this year for some maybe more offroad riding but in the end, I have postponed this to maybe next year. At the moment I am mostly riding for leisure in the late evening during the summer and running errands around the town.

With not getting a new bike, I thought I would do some upgrades instead. You can't beat playing around with your bike and a spanner. Some things I have bought are a new crankset, pedals and drink holder.

Sadly, I realised that I had bought the wrong tool to be able to remove the crankset and have now ordered the correct shimano tool to do it so couldn't put the new crank on today.

My bike is a Cube SL Road bike.

Some of the upgrades that I have done so far this season are to increase the hight of the handlebars and replace the standard cube handlegrips. With the increased hight it is much more enjoyable to ride. The new grips are with screws so stay firmly on, the cube standard ones kept slipping and it was driving me nuts.

Next up, I had a U lock that I prefer to use instead of my chain lock, so I added the U lock holder onto the bike in case I need to make a pit stop.

One other maintenance task that I did was that my rear disc brake was rubbing so I needed to recalibrate it and to do that I just loosened up the brake and tightened it up being sure that it wasn't touching again. I also pump up the tyres nice and high with the air pump.

Next up, I installed the drinks holder. It was just loosening a couple of screws and then tighten them with the holder on.

After, I replaced the standard Cube pedals. They are too small and not comfortable. This was easily enough to undo with a spanner.

That leaves just the crankset to replace which is pretty easy enough to do too. Once I get the tool I will do another post with that upgrade. I will be able to clean the hard to reach part of the frame when I do it, so I am looking forward to that.

Once I was finished, I took my bike out for a nice 25km ride and the larger pedals made a nice difference and it was much better to ride. I can't wait for the crankset to be replaced.

Thanks for reading.

That still looks like a new bike Steve. I would never be able to do the upgrade my self if I have a bike. hahah

Thanks, I gave it a cleanup, but it still needs more deeper cleaning when I get some better brushes. Lots of the maintenance is quite easy, Im sure you would do it.

I used to ride my bike everywhere. And then I stopped. It was an activity that I enjoyed very much. I got to go for a bike ride. My bike hasn't moved in years.

I really like it as it is keeping fit but not so hard like jogging. I try to use instead of the car around town to save resources too.

I just enjoy the peacefulness of riding my bike in the country roads. I drive a SUV with a V6 engine. I take that everywhere I go. Where I live everything is too far to walk or ride bike to. I prefer to ride bike for enjoyment. My SUV for everything else.

I think you can't beat a nice SUV for getting around. I agree you can't beat a nice peaceful bike ride though. 🙂

Now your cycle is all good. I also prefer U-lock instead of chain lock. But my cycle has lost the drink holders . Sad

Thanks, it is a good ride now. I hope you get a new drink holder soon. Cycling is thirsty work.

Wow I'm amazed to see that you also ride on cycle, i thought your son ride the cycle and you ride the motor bike 😹 but yes cycling is good for us too as it's a different kind of exercise

Thanks for sharing your bicyle and the bike maintenance. I also try to do some of the maintenance myself. It saves money and you'll understand your bike better.
Good job!

It looks like a nice bike and with this post, you reminded me that I could have a look at mine too, the last time I was on a bike was sometime in October last year ...

Some nice U -lock you got there, looking good!

I definitely have to get a bike soon. Have a scooter but I feel like a child riding it for some reason :D

I like that you did upgrades and stuff by yourself, I like repairing stuff on my own too, it is very satisfying thing to do:)

A scooter would be cool to have. I am also finding it relaxing and enjoyable to do repairs and maintenance tasks myself. Each year your knowledge grows a little. :)

Nice job you've done here! I missed having a bike and taking trips around the country side. Planning on getting one next year when I go back for a visit.

I think it's good to have the tools and do the maintenance ourselves, especially when we have the time. Contributes to self-reliant skills :)

Thanks, you cant beat the bike riding in the countryside and summer. I am thinking up some ideas for a bike trip. Definetly doing your own maintenance pays off over the long term. :)

Your new pedals are absolutely charming! I have more or less the same (just other brand). My Author bike is old, I've upgraded everything I needed few years ago, nothing to write about, but I still can show how it looks like. Should I?..
NB - I prefer cycling on the asphalt roads, offroads is fun but its not my cup of tea... hehe

Yeah I think so, that would be cool. I am thinking how crazy I was for not upgrading these pedals sooner, they make a huge difference. I am mostly asphalt roads but sometimes need to go offroad, so went for this cross bike, but not sure how I would be really offroad yet.

In my place of living (my native place), there are bike fixing experts at every corner of the street. Hence, we didn't need to fix any problem by ourselves. Hence, I don't know how to change or fix any problem. I can only do pump up the tires and tubes.

Good work, Steve. Any other qualities you have that you haven't showed us yet.

Great bike 👍
I've heard that good bikes and good cyclists are recognized by the fact that they don't have mudguards, but I don't really agree. 😀
