This is my post for #freewriters 2758 prompt I can’t relate hosted by @mariannewest

The last of our rainy weather is over for a while. We have a plume of Sierra dust that is supposed to reach us tomorrow. I am not sure how long it will last, but by the satellite, it looks to be a large area. It is weird how dust can stay in the air long enough to cross an entire ocean.

My sisters and I put our mother's property she owed in another state up for sale. It was listed one day, and we got an offer. They offered 5K less, but we said no, and then they agreed to our full asking price. We thought it would close at the end of May, but the title company had a problem because they had our Mom having 7 children, not the five of us she gave birth to. I told them she had five children, and our two brothers had passed away. They wanted to know who the other boy and girl were. That had us puzzled, but when I spoke with them, it was our Dad's two children that Mom raised. I do not know how they knew about them, but I got it straightened out. Then they needed our brother's death certificates.

One of my sisters went to the office of Vital Statistics to get their death certificates, but since they passed 36 and 46 years ago, our local office did not have them, so we had to send for them by mail. We finally received them and got them in the mail to the realtor. Hopefully, by next week we can close on the property.

When the sister who had the death certificates brought them to me, I was watching the TV show American Pickers and she tried to tell me that two of the stars of the show killed the third one. I said no, they did not, he died from complications of a stroke. She began telling me about a documentary she saw, and the man and woman of the show were prosecuted for murder. I said, No way, but she insisted it was true because it was a documentary.

I tried to tell her it had to be made up for likes on something like Facebook, she said it was on YouTube, I said it was still made for likes, and she still disagreed. I fact checked it with Snopes and read to her what it said. It was an AI-generated documentary, and there was a man with the same name as the star who was convicted of murder, and she still argued with me. I said, have you seen the posts on FB about celebrities who have passed away, and they are false, she said, yes I never click on them. I said this is the same thing. Then I said, have you seen anything about it in the real news? I am not sure, but I think that finally got through to her.

I can’t relate to people like her, when something is as far fetched as that is, and you take it as truth. She is always telling me untruths that she hears about on her news channel, she only watches one news source and I tried to tell her they are not going to give both sides of the news and since that is all she watches, AI is not going to put any other type of news on her Feed. She shrugged her shoulders at me. I swear I just can't with her.

One of the books often targeted by book banners at the library is by an author who shares the name of a socialist rabble-rouser. They aren't the same person. But even if they were, nothing about the book is political, and it would still be silly. But facts are often ignored by people with an agenda. I also have seen many satirical articles treated like news and obvious falsehoods spread like wildfire because people care more about hype than truth. It's sad.

I hear you.
I do not get it when someone reads something so ridiculous and believes it is true. I forget what it said, but there was once a post going around about something Abe Lincoln said about the internet, and some people believed it.
