This is my post for #freewriters 2720 prompt graduate of loser university hosted by @mariannewest
Today was one of those days that if it could go wrong, it would.
My sister told me that she would catch the fish if I would drive the boat and show her where to fish. So a few days ago, I went online and she bought the commercial license she will need. That part went off without a hitch. That is what I thought, they had sent me an e-mail saying we could purchase the new license. It was not until after we bought it that we saw the license was not good until July 1st. Why would they say we can buy it now and it won't be any good for 2 more months.
Yesterday she came over and we worked on pigfish traps. We mended 25 and made sure they had good ropes on them. I told her today we could put out some crab traps. When she got here this morning, my boat trailer had a flat and my husband had to change the tire. We hooked the boat trailer to my new truck, but the plug on the trailer lights would not match the one on the truck. We had to unhook it from my truck and hook it to her truck.
Now I noticed the hook that clips to the bow of the boat from the winch was rusted and broken it was no longer usable, but we had another one, so I cut the rope and tied the new one on it.
This is when I noticed I had not bought the new registration for the boat and trailer tag, they expired in 2024. So on our way to the boat ramp, we stopped at the DMV to get the new ones.
When we got to the boat ramp my sister did not want to back the boat down the ramp so we switched drivers. I started to back it down and realized I could not see over the toolbox in the bed of her truck, I had to hang my head out of the window, but if I turned the trailer, I could no longer see it. With her help directing me, I was able to put the boat in the water.
By now I am thinking the people watching are wondering how I could be a commercial fisherman and I am feeling like a graduate of loser university of fishing.
We got the boat in the water, and I parked the truck. When I got back to the dock, I could not see my sister anywhere. When I got on the dock, I saw her standing in the water holding the boat, I am still not clear why she was there.
I like to put my crab traps in 3 feet of water, but my depth finder was not on my boat. My husband had used it but does not know what he did with it, so I measured the depth with my 6 foot oar.
With the traps set, we went back to the ramp and pulled the boat out. For once today, everything seemed to be going alright. BUT and that was a BIG BUT, as we were coming home, I noticed one of the uprights on the boat trailer was sticking out sideways, it is supposed to be straight up. I had told my sister to not pull on them when getting in or out of the boat with it on the trailer, she said she didn't, so I figured it broke on its own but would be alright until we got home, that is as long as she did not take out someones mailbox with it, she didn't.
At home, I got out of the truck to open the gate, that is when I saw it was not the upright that broke, the trailer broke.
My sister and I were trying to block the boat up so we could get the trailer from under it, but I could never get the blocks right where I felt secure enough to leave it, so we waited for my husband to get home and help. He took his pigfish traps to see if there was bait, he said they were still too small. Trout season starts this Thursday.
My daughter came out to where we were working on the boat and said someone named Chris called and said my boat trailer light and a piece of metal were sitting by his mailbox. Chris lives near the beginning of the road to my house. I am glad I got one back, the other light had been dragging on the road and all that was left of it was the insert that holds the bulb.

This was a rough, rough day ... we pray tomorrow will be better!
