Why Flagulon Reine Is My Secret Weapon | Splinterlands #478
Everyone talks about Djinn Oshannus. Everyone builds around Conclave Arcana monsters. Everyone chases the obvious powerhouses. Meanwhile, I am quietly winning battles with a 6-mana Gladius monster that most players dismiss as just another magic attacker. Flagulon Reine might be the most underrated card in my collection, and my recent victory proves exactly why you should pay attention.
Card Details
Here is what most players see when they look at Flagulon Reine: six mana, two magic attack, six health. Decent stats, nothing spectacular. They are missing the point entirely. Bloodlust is not just +1 to all stats when it kills something. It is +1 to all stats every time Flagulon Reine kills another monster.
Battle Details
In my recent 22-mana battle with the Wands Out ruleset, Flagulon Reine was the difference between winning and grinding out a close victory. While my opponent focused on void and phase abilities, I used Flagulon Reine, which turns every monster kill into a compounding beast.
Why Blast Makes Bloodlust Inevitable
The synergy between blast and bloodlust is so, so good. Blast hits the target plus adjacent monsters. In magic-only battles, generally, magic monsters are very squishy (low health), and therefor,e blast regularly damages 2-3 monsters per attack. Those damaged monsters become easier targets for finishing blows. Those finishing blows trigger bloodlust.
In my battle, I positioned Flagulon Reine last specifically to maximize blast value against my opponent's backline. Most players treat 6-mana monsters as mid-tier filler. They stick them in random positions and hope for decent value. This completely wastes Flagulon Reine's potential.
Why Did My Strategy Work?
At 6 mana, Flagulon Reine fits into almost any lineup without breaking your strategy. This flexibility is more valuable than raw stats. In my 22-mana victory, I deployed Shock Trooper and Prismatic Energy as frontline magic tanks to protect the backline and specifically Flagulon Reine. Flagulon Reine filled the last slot perfectly while providing abilities that scaled with battle length. A more expensive monster would have forced worse positioning choices. A cheaper monster would have provided less elimination potential. This sweet spot mana cost means Flagulon Reine works in low-mana efficient builds and high-mana comprehensive lineups. Few monsters offer this range of deployment options.
At the beginning of the battle, Flagulon Reine was not able to impact the battle much, with Shock Trooper and Prismatic Energy proving to be more than their worth. The opposition's magic tank, Djinn Oshannus, does not need any introduction and the battle was looking bleak when Shock Trooper and Prismatic Energy fell. However, this is when Flagulon Reine came in clutch with bloodlust. And this is \ what separates players who succeed with Flagulon Reine from those who dismiss it: understanding compound growth.
The critical elimination of Djinn Oshannus by Flagulon Reine came at such a pivotal point in the battle and turned the tide of victory in my favor, as it became the strongest monster on the field.
Why the Meta Sleeps on Gladius Cards
The Splinterlands meta tends to focus on readily available cards from new sets. Gladius cards require guild and brawl participation, so fewer players own them. This results in a whole category of powerful monsters that many players do not value. Flagulon Reine suffers from this blind spot more than most Gladius cards because its power is not immediately obvious. Legendary gladius cards with more prominent stats and abilities get more attention.
Concluding Thoughts
If you want to succeed with Flagulon Reine, stop thinking about it as a 6-mana magic attacker. Please start thinking about it as a 6-mana investment that pays dividends over time. Pair it with summoners that boost magic damage to help stack those magic damage kills. Protect it long enough for bloodlust to activate multiple times. Sometimes the best strategy is the one nobody else is using.
