Weapons Training Ability | Splinterlands #466

Splinterlands delivers its most satisfying moments when strategy beats raw card power. My recent battle perfectly demonstrates how understanding game mechanics can level the playing field against superior opponents through the Weapons Training ability.

Understanding Weapons Training Mechanics

Before diving into the battle analysis, understanding Weapons Training's core mechanics is essential. This ability grants attack type and power to adjacent no-attack units with a maximum of three power. The training persists even after the Weapons Training monster dies.

Key interactions make Weapons Training particularly powerful:

  • You can position one weapons-trained unit on each side of your Weapons Training monster.
  • Different attack types of stack, while identical types take the highest value.
  • Trained units still count as no-attack for targeting purposes like Snipe.
  • The ability cannot be dispelled, ensuring permanent enhancement.

Facing an over-levelled opponent in a 16-mana battle with Keep Your Distance and Reverse Speed rulesets. The low mana cap coupled with the melee monster restrictions, gave a headache. Keep Your Distance eliminates melee monsters, forcing players into ranged and magic damage strategies. Reverse Speed flips speed mechanics, making slower monsters attack first. My lineup centered around Aves Sturgis as the Weapons Training monster, strategically positioned to empower two no-attack monsters: Lord Arianthus and Pelacor Conjurer.

Lineup Details

  • Tyrus Paladium (Archon) provided +1 armor to all friendly monsters.
  • Lord Arianthus served as the primary tank - a no-attack monster packed with abilities.
  • Aves Sturgis functioned as the strategic centerpiece, granting magic damage to adjacent no-attack monsters.
  • Pelacor Conjurer completed the strategy as another no-attack monster with multiple abilities that opponents routinely undervalue.

Often, opponents see no-attack monsters and mentally categorize them as non-threats, focusing their attention on obvious damage dealers. In this battle, thanks to Weapons Training, Lord Arianthus and Pelacor Conjurer transformed from no-attack monster pieces into magic damage powerhouses. They retained their original defensive and utility functions while gaining magic damage. In a low-mana cap battle, this is crucial to have monsters that offer versatility and utility.

My opponent's strategy confusingly focused on high-speed ranged damage dealers; however, they misread the Reverse Speed ruleset's implications. Under normal conditions, high-speed ranged monsters strike first. Reverse Speed inverts this advantage, allowing slower monsters to attack first. My opponent's speedy damage dealers became sitting ducks, attacking last instead of first.

The battle unfolded exactly as planned. My opponent's high-speed monsters suffered multiple misses due to the speed reversal, allowing my Weapons Training-enhanced team to systematically eliminate their formation. Lord Arianthus, Aves Sturgis, and Pelacor Conjurer picked off enemy monsters one by one. The opponent's initial meatshields (Furious Chicken and their own Pelacor Conjurer) fell quickly, forcing their ranged damage dealers into position one. Ranged monsters lose effectiveness when moved to position one, and the battle was effectively over. A satisfying victory against a higher-levelled opponent is always worth savoring and writing about!

Takeaways From The Battle

This battle highlighted several key principles:

  • Strategic placement of no-attack monsters adjacent to your Weapons Training monster maximizes the ability's impact while maintaining formation integrity.
  • Reading and understanding the rulesets can help you overcome higher-level opponents.
  • Using abilities like Weapons Training unlocks different approaches and strategies.

Concluding Thoughts

Weapons Training represents everything awesome about Splinterlands. It offers the opportunity to level up no-attack monsters into overpowered beasts and shows that understanding game mechanics matters more than owning the most expensive cards. My victory against a higher-levelled opponent demonstrates that every splinterlands battle offers opportunities to overcome stronger opposition. The most satisfying splinterlands moments come from these battles where planning, understanding the game's mechanics, and strategy combine to achieve victory against the odds. Weapons Training ability provides the perfect tool for creating these memorable moments in a game we all love and play!
