The villagers feared the old well, claiming it whispered at night. Curious, Amir peered inside and found dozens of trapped birds, their wings clipped by someone for amusement. Amir was a young lad. He was just 15 years old when he saw what he saw. It was so damaging to his young personality. The cruelty wasn’t hunger or survival, it was pleasure. That realization haunted him far longer than the well’s eerie whispers ever could. He had never seen anything like that before. After so many years of therapeutic sessions and shifting to a different city, he was finally able to move on with his life and family. He got married to his colleague Sharmeen. She was the one who helped him move on from that unnatural cruelty.
