Every time I decided to go to downtown Lanús, I would pass by this square that I could only see from the bus, but I never had time to get off and explore it, so I just settled for looking at the enormous statue of General Sarmiento as I continued on my way, wondering what he might be thinking inside, even though he was just a carved figure.

But a few days ago, I decided to go there with my youngest son, as a way to get him away from screens and enjoy playing outdoors instead of online, and boy did I succeed!

The plaza occupies an entire block, surrounded by vegetation on all four sides, with wide walkways between the rows of trees where, in addition to walking, you can also ride a bike or rollerblade without interrupting the activities of others.

If it looked huge from the bus, being closer to the statue of General Sarmiento, it is overwhelming in its grandeur, and even more so if you know the importance of this historical figure for Argentine society of his time, but also for today's society, since thanks to him, public and compulsory education was established for all children living in the country, but also for the many immigrants who have come to these lands.

At the foot of the statue, four relief plaques detail important moments in which Sarmiento played a leading role, although unfortunately some of them have been vandalized, as have some of the explanatory signs.

A park for the enjoyment of both young and older children, it is a meeting point for many of those who live nearby, as well as an exercise area, where we took the opportunity to “train” a little.

As evening was falling, many neighbors showed up to drink mate and chat a bit before returning home. Some took the opportunity to walk their dogs, while others just walked around to exercise without having to pay for a gym membership.

In one corner, you can see the bust of Guillermo F. Caebeler, who was the founder of Villa General Paz, in recognition of his actions during the 18th century.

Diagonally across from it is a huge wooden sculpture of a woman, dated 2010 and bearing the name of what I imagine to be its creator. In front of it is a small triangular grotto with an image of the Virgin Mary.

A carousel can be seen in the background, but as it is a paid attraction, we did not even go near it, nor did we go near a trampoline placed in the vicinity of the park, where some street vendors were also waiting to make their daily earnings.

The cool spring weather ended up attracting more people to the square just as the sun was about to set, taking advantage of the fact that the lighting provided by the solar panels ensures that even when it is dark, you can still see where you are walking.

Cada vez que decido ir al centro de Lanús, pasaba por esta plaza que veía solo desde el colectivo, pero no me daba el tiempo de bajarme y explorarla, así que solo me conformaba con ver la enorme estatua de un General Sarmiento mientras seguía mi camino pensando sobre qué cosas podía estar cavilando en su interior, aunque fuera solo una figura tallada.

Pero en días pasados me propuse a ir hasta allá junto con mi hijo menor, como una medida de alejarlo de las pantallas y que disfrute de jugar al aire libre y no en línea, y vaya que lo logré!

La plaza ocupa toda una manzana, rodeada de vegetación en sus cuatro costados, teniendo entre una y otra cuadrícula de árboles caminerias amplias en las que además de pasear, también se puede andar en bicicleta o patines, sin interrumpir la actividad de los demás.

Si desde el colectivo se veía inmensa, estando más cerca de la estatua del General Sarmiento, abruma por su grandiosidad, y más aún si se conoce la importancia de este personaje histórico para la sociedad argentina de su época, pero también de la actual, ya que gracias a él se logró establecer la educación pública y obligatoria para todos los niños que habitan el país, pero también para los muchos emigrantes que han llegado a estas tierras.

En el pie de la estatua, 4 placas en relieve detallan momentos importantes que tuvieron a Sarmiento como protagonista, aunque lamentablemente algunas de ellas han sido vandalizadas, al igual que algunos letreros explicativos.

Un parque para el disfrute de niños tanto pequeños como para los más grandes, es punto de encuentro de muchos de los que habitan en su cercanía, así como también el área de ejercicios, en la cual aprovechamos para "entrenar" un poco.

Como al ir estaba cayendo la tarde, muchos vecinos se fueron haciendo presentes para tomar mate y conversar un poco antes de volver a casa, algunos aprovechaban para pasear a sus perros, mientras otros solo caminaban en los alrededores para ejercitarse sin necesidad de tener que pagar un gimnasio.

En una de sus esquinas se puede ver el busto de Guillermo F. Caebeler, quien fuera el fundador de Villa General Paz, como reconocimiento por sus acciones, durante el siglo XVIII.

Mientras que diagonal a ella se encuentra una enorme figura tallada en madera con la figura de una mujer, con la fecha 2010 y el nombre de quien imagino fue su autor, y frente a ella una pequeña gruta en forma de triángulo con la imagen de la Virgen María.

Un carrusel se logra ver al fondo, pero al ser una atracción paga, ni siquiera nos acercamos para allá, al igual que una cama elástica colocada en las adyacencias del parque, donde también se apostaban algunos vendedores ambulantes, esperando lograr las ganancias del día.

El clima fresco de la primavera terminó atrayendo mas gente a la plaza justo cuando ya el sol estaba por ocultarse, aprovechando que la iluminación producto de los paneles solares, garantiza que aunque esté oscuro, se podrá ver por donde caminar.
